Feeling the need to get away from LA for a weekend, especially after reading Rebecca's 25 reasons to leave town? Why not hit up the beach at Del Mar? We just got back from a weekend trip to San Diego and feel refreshed. In between checking out polar bears plunge at the San Diego Zoo and strolling through downtown La Jolla, we were pleasantly surprised by the quaint beach town of Del Mar, California.

Aside from the beach (which, by the way, is a pretty good surf spot judging from the sheer amount of surfers pushing their way into the water and elbowing out boogie boarders in the process) and the constant strains of Here Comes the Bride (it's also a popular wedding spot), this town has some good food and really great modern beach houses. Just walking through some neighborhoods en route to the beach had us feeling like we were flipping through the pages of Elle Decor's Beach House Edition. Instead of the weather-worn beaten down seaside homes that we'd grown up with in Virginia Beach and North Carolina's Outer Banks, Del Mar's beach houses are immaculate and modern while maintaining a sense of personality. One thing we noticed: Bright yellow front doors seem to be a popular choice despite the different styles of the homes.
If you do head out there for a visit--about two hours south of Los Angeles--definitely take a walk around the neighborhood near the beach. Other things to do around Del Mar: horse races and hot air balloon rides over the coast. If you get hungry for something other than American cuisine, check out Le Bambou which specializes in French-Vietnamese cuisine.

Damn you. As if summer traffic weren't bad enough, now you're inviting even MORE people down here!

Another Del Martian here.... It now takes me 20 minutes to get home from work when it used to only take 5 during the off season!

I work in Solana Beach, a few minutes away and love going to Del Mar. The beaches along the 15th street area is a very nice place to spend your weekend!
For a $uper meal try Epazotes in the Plaza.

Well, at least now I understand--very few AT:LA bloggers actually know Southern California. No, there's not many Cape Cod cottages here. It's not the Outer Banks. I don't expect this site to be all Sunset magazine, but.....
But what's a day in Del Mar without going to the track? Where the turf meets the surf, and racing season only lasts until Sept. 3.

OK, these Southern Cal "weekend getaways" are making this East Coast girl jealous...

I have a photo of that beach - taken a litltle closer so you see more of the beach and not the houses seen in the foreground of this pic - that I used on my work computer for several winters. Throughout the day I'd take a minute here and there for a "beach break" and just look and imagine myself sitting there. Although it was sort of bittersweet - because I wasn't there - it did help me get through quite a few snowy days with a little better attitude.
