apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Ah Yes! Rediscovering Our Love Of Wallpaper

040309-wallpaper01.jpgWe're seeing fewer homes with wallpaper. Perhaps it's a sign of the changing times (papering an entire room with some of the patterns we love is a pricey proposition and, with the push towards simplicity and calm, papering an entire room now may feel fussy and chaotic). But one of the entries in our Small Cool contest reminded us of how riveting wallpaper can be when it is used well...

040309-wallpaper02.jpgRather than covering an entire room with the stuff, why not consider using it to spotlight architectural details or even to create them where none exist? If you have a built-in nook (as do many older homes and apartments in Los Angeles), this is the perfect way to spotlight it. In a bedroom, wallpapering the wall behind the bed can create a focal point or it can be used to highlight the headboard. In the living room, wallpapering one wall or even one portion of a wall, can create a focal point in an otherwise boxy or non-descript room. You can also wallpaper a panel of foam core and use the panel behind a desk or couch, similar to what Rebecca pointed out in her post on texture yesterday,

I agree with the previous poster - I think we're seeing wallpaper make a major comeback! You see it all over the place now, with updated and modern looking designs.

I agree, we see more wallpaper lately. Maybe it is because there are eco-friendly alternatives to vinyl with its voc-leaking vapors.

Love the idea of using one strip in an alcove or behind a bed.

Here's an article about some greener options:

the kitchen layout reminds me so much of the "sad kitchen" posted a few days ago (different ceiling).
both rooms are really cute. love the pink!
I really love the wallpaper that has come out the past few years. I do wonder if it will look as ridiculous and dated in the future as 60s and 70s wallpaper looked after a few decades.

Wallpaper is a must-go at least in one room of your house! These examples are just the look.

PS: What's the name of the chairs in the first picture?
I know they're great classics... but I completely forgot!
Anyone?

All decorating trends go in cycles. It's about time for wallpaper to come back. I do admit the new paper seems to have a more elegant look than most of the predecessors.
