Escapes: Los Olivos, CA

081208_wine01.jpgIf you want to take an amazing escape to wine country, take a scenic 2 hour drive north to Los Olivos, CA. This quaint, former stage coach town is home to a thousand people and some amazing wineries and vineyards.

081208_wine02.jpgDotted along the main road are tasting rooms that are mostly built in the craftsman style. The tasting rooms are typically decorated in a simple manner and the layout is to showcase the wine but they all seem to keep the integrity of the craftsman structure. 081208_wine03a.jpgA little drive will take you through the winding roads to the larger wineries and vineyards like Firestone and Fess Parker. Plus if you want to check out more wine country, head just a few miles to Buellton or Solvang (where the popular movie “Sideways” was filmed). These larger wineries offer a range of home decor in the spirit of wine and enjoying wine.081208_wine05.jpgIn a town with rich heritage, very friendly people, amazing rolling hills and mountains, Los Olivos is truly a perfect weekend escape. I have been enjoyying weekend trips to Los Olivos, Solvang and Buellton for the past few years. October is one of the best month's to visit.

A few must see's:
Melville Winery, Lompoc- Beautiful location. Ideal for picnicking. They make one of the best Pinot Noirs around -2006 Estate Carrie's is well worth the splurge.

Sunstone Winery- This certifiied organic vineyard offers buttery chardonnays and another great locale for a picnic lunch.

Patrick's Side Street Cafe-fresh and delicious meals plus Patrick is a lot of fun as are the locals.

I love this area too! A few of my faves...

Paula's Pancake House in Solvang -- YUM! The Danish Pancake Combo is fabulous. And great coffee.

Rusack Winery on Ballard Canyon Road -- Great wines, beautiful location. I always bring cheese, bread, and fruit for a snack/picnic here.

Los Olivos Grocery -- They BBQ the tri tip in the parking lot and it's one of the best sandwhiches I've ever had.

I grew up in Santa Barbara and boarded my horse in Los Olivos, many happy family night Sunday dinners at Mattei's Tavern built in late 1800's one of the stagecoach stops, next one is Cold Springs Tavern.
