LA Good Questions: Local Curtain Experts?

atla022808drape.jpgATLA reader Karyn wants to know about any personal recommendations for curtain installation:

"I have French doors and I would like to have curtains for them like the ones below. However, what I really want is for someone to come to my house, measure the space, figure out how to make it look most excellent, order the curtains, and come back and install them, rod and all. Does anyone know of a place like this?"

She continues: "My bedroom is still suffering from my attempt to do window treatments myself. The curtains are 2" off the floor, a little too short in the width, and I think the rod is crooked. I want to just throw money, rather than time and effort, at my problem and make it perfect. Recommendations? Thanks!"

We've always just measured and installed our own curtains, but we've heard a few people mention using Jacoby Co. Inc., a Los Angeles husband and wife team that have covered windows spanning styles from Neutra interiors to Spanish Colonial homes. They offer the 1st hour of consultation free, so the more you have prepared to show as examples, the better irregardless of who you go with. Cory & Gary Jacoby can be contacted at 310-476-3291 or 818-999-3468.

Those look like 4 panels of the the Ikea Merete curtain in its longest length. I don't think you would need to pay someone to do that for you. Unless you don
t know a friend who can assist you. Good luck and best wishes though.

Smith & Noble has this service, but I've never used it. www.smithandnoble.com
I'm sure there are local services, too.

You can try Gypsys Palace on Vermont:

There aren't cheap if you have them do everything, but their fabric and knowledge is awesome.

Aero Shade on Third Street near the Beverly Center does custom drapery as well as window shades. They are very nice to deal with and will come and measure the space to make sure everything is done correctly.

I first approached them about custom drapery for my bedroom but the estimate was far more than my budget would allow. My research has shown that their prices were not at all out of line, but I had no idea how expensive custom drapery (excluding fabric costs) could be... It was an education.

I later used them for custom solar shades for the living room and dining room and was very pleased by the entire experience.

It should be relatively easy to find someone to come out (yellow pages) but the trick is finding someone you can trust to do a good job at a reasonable price. I find that you can usually get get recommendations from Angie's List, and here is an article on buying window treatments locally (and online). Most companies will come out for a free consultation at your home. You should be able to gauge how good a job that person will do during your interaction with them. After hearing from a few people you can compare quotes and even get other companies to bring their prices down... it is all a negotiation.

Best of luck.

I second Scott's suggestion of Gypsy's Palace. The ladies who run this shop are so friendly and helpful. I must have browsed in there a dozen times before deciding on my fabric and they were always gracious. And they can help you work within a budget as well.
