A nicely designed set of computer speakers is always a must on an efficiently designed workspace. The latest USB speakers from LaCie were designed by famed industrial designer Neil Poulton. These speakers are in the shape of ship-vents.

The reason to use USB speakers instead of regular ones, is that they don't need to be plugged in. They take all of their power through the USB port. That cuts down on clutter and keeps things tidy in your workspace, which is always a good thing. Since they are USB based, they can be easily used as an extra set of speakers for your laptop. The white and black finish matches most laptops.

The USB version of these speakers are cheaper than the firewire version, because the latter ones use 6 W of power, while the USB ones are less powerful. There have been reports that these speakers will hiss a lot, but that is due to the fact that they have no external controls and cannot be switched off. Ultimately, you get what you pay for.

These LaCie USB speakers will be available this month for about $60. The firewire version will set you back $100.
