Gone are the days when dorm decor was just posters and milk crates. Dorm living has come a long way on the sophistication scale, and students are much savvier about setting up their space. No surprise then that Laken, our favorite college freshman, already has a strong sense of style, and cares what her room looks like, even if it's for only nine months.
This summer Laken created a Tumblr with inspirational images of homes and rooms that spoke to her, and used it as reference while shopping for dorm decor.
As you can see, Laken's going for a boho meets Morocco meets flea market meets romance kind of thing. Because painting is a big no-no — along with other permanent changes — she has to find temporary ways to bring texture and color into her space. Here were the things on her wish list:
rich jewel tones in warm colors
mixed patterns and layered fabrics
a bed canopy for privacy and to soften the room
options for non-overhead lighting
a way to hang photographs of friends and family
It's such a far cry from when I was in college. At the time, I thought my room — with its milk crates, tapestry, and halogen torchiere floor lamps — was all this:
