It's about the last place we would expect to find cozy, warm-glowing lamp shades. But the glamorous stage set of last night's Academy Awards ceremony did indeed feature an unlikely wall of yellow glowing lamp shades.
Lamps featured throughout the rest of the theater, too. Sprinkled throughout the seating area, small table lamps faded from warm golden light to cooler blues.
For us, lamp shades conjure up images of home: living rooms, reading nooks, and intimate bedsides. Do you think the shades used throughout the Oscars set were meant to introduce that homey vibe? Let us know what you thought about the juxtaposition of cozy comfort with unbridled glitz.

It looked like the VIP roomat a TGI Friday's in Wilkes-Barre.
I've seen this used to nice effect at restaurants - such as Americano in SF above the serving line.

I thought it was hip, and maybe even grounding against all the crystal glitz. I liked it!
I noticed it last night as well and really liked it.
I thought the lampshades were just strange, but I LOOOOVED the chandelier crystals! I want them. All. Now.
I knew this would make it to Apt. Therapy today! I thought it was odd enough for people to scoff at, yet saavy/chic enough to blend in with the overall retro, rat-pack Osacars feel.
The stage designer must have some good connections at the local Lamps-R-Us.
I agree with sassifrassi.. it added to the whole 'pink panther', rat-pack, retro, 50's-60's thing. I liked it.
I thought the lamp shades made no sense but just looked stupid in that setting. On lamps they're fine. Big racks of them looked like a lampshade wholesaler got lost and invaded the Oscars for no good reason.
Surreal. Glamorous. Clubby.
Very Hollywood to me.
I didn't care for this. It seemed like the opposite of glamour to me, like the Oscars were trying to be more "homey" and relatable.
Well I for one want the Oscars to shine and sparkle, dazzling me with glowy fantastical things that are too fabulous for everyday existence. I don't want to be reminded of the crap and homestuff ephemera that surrounds my little life in Dullsville, USA.
I was bewildered by those lamp shades too. They just seemed out of place at the Oscars, BUT I do like them. I think they'd be really neat to see at a resturant. When they first came down I was like, "are those...lamp shades? Dude those are totally lamp shades. Well thats neat!" but I wasn't like "Ohhhhhh the glamourous glamourous hollywood lamp shades. They're better then us!" which is how I think the oscars are usually supposed to be.
You think they were CFL's?
I liked it. Totally agree with Patrick (t.o.o.). Totally thought it was nice way to ground all the glitz. They usually go with ALL glitter and they end up looking way to cheesy and pimped out.
Added cozy to the surroundings. As if it were a living room. I thought it was an interesting idea.
the flying lampshade screen drop was just strange. if i'd been able to see the context, with other lamps in the audience, perhaps i'd not have thought so--but when it sailed in behind one of the presenters, i looked at my husband and said, "what's the joke with the lampshades?"
that said, i love the cozy glow of a nice shaded lamp in the living room or lounge.
The lampshades looked warm and inviting, but I agree with previous posters who said that the Oscars are supposed to look a little more shiny and alienating.
I wonder if the lampshades were Hollywood's nod to the fact that most movies are watched at home these days and not on the silver screen?
Ooo...good call "Amnesia".
