Q: I have found what I think is the perfect lamp for my space. It is the right size and shape, however, I'm not exactly ready to drop $300 on a lamp. Not to mention, my husband already can't understand my obsession with $7 lamps from Goodwill. There is absolutely no way I can explain to the guy who thinks the lighted ceiling fan in our military housing is perfectly acceptable, that a $300 lamp is necessary. I was wondering if you or the readers had seen something similar in size, shape and style to this lamp; any help would be great!

Editor: Kat- yeah I can relate to the government housing issue! The Magnum Lamp does have a lovely shape and a not so lovely price-tag. Have you taken a look on Overstock or at IKEA? Both of them tend to have great deals on floor lamps; we like the 365+ Lunta for $100.
Readers, do you have any additional recommendations for Kat?

Lamps Plus has very large shades much like that one for around $40. I would look for a floor lamp on Craigslist, and replace the harp with something large like a 12", and use a very large shade.
I used this exact hack on a lamp in my living room that looks great.

It may just be me, but I have not had very good experiences with lamps from Ikea and that lamp isn't all that inexpensive. The base/shades may be stylish but the wiring doesn't work very well.
I say spend the money on a shade and re-purpose an old base that you are certain it will work.
