Seasonal landscaping is something on the minds of lots of homeowners with yards and a few lucky New Yorkers with outdoor spaces of their own. And when it comes to rooftops, landscape designer Jeffrey Erb has a take on landscaping that stretches the seasonal all the way through Thanksgiving:
This rooftop features pumpkins brought back from his family's Lancaster County farm. They're piled up in abundant fashion, in high contrast to the towering brick of the surrounding cityscape.

White Enamel Flatwa...
And the fun begins once they start rotting.
Why not just cook them?
I find the air conditioners on the surrounding builidings more intriguing. Especially as the buildings fade into dark the units look like white floating lights.
Love pumpkins and gourds of all kinds. The more the merrier!
Sorry, but all I can think of is hauling the lot of them up, and then hauling the lot of them down when they are rotten.
He clearly has no problem with heights!
Color me completely underwhelmed. Seems just like gratuitous advertisement so someone can add "Featured on" to their website.
I can think of a lot more features that would bring an autumn terrace to life than a still-life arrangements of pumpkins.
Very nice but it takes a "Landscape Designer" to pile them up like this?
I'm with lsp.
Though I see nothing wrong with the still life pumpkin arrangement, the rest of the patio, or what we can see of it, is rather stark and completely underwhelming. Certainly not what I'd expect from a landscape architect. As a result, to me this post is a bit of a negative calling card for him.
Well, I bet you that high up, the squirrels can't take a bite out of each one. That's a plus.
Squirrels, no. Rats, yes. I assume that the pumpkins would be outdoors only for a while so as to avoid rodents and rot.
London Terrace?
I am a big fan of unique fall fruits, but I would have an overwhelming urge to drop one (o.k. several at once) over the side just to watch it splat.
Really? This is landscape design?
Yes, London Terrace. Penthouse shot from the roof-deck at 470 W 24th.
I was wondering why there's an entire dumpster of red tiles in front of the building. The off white seems a little cold, no?
The A/C units do add a kind of punctuation to all that brick.
"Seasonal landscaping"? WTF? Surely the whole point of landscaping is that it's long-term?
Seriously, this dude must have a carbon footprint to rival a small country's.
All of that wasted food. Couldn't they donate it all to a food bank instead? I'm sure there are hungry people in New York who could do with some tasty soup or roasted squash.
@sierraberra42: thanks for pointing out the air conditioners; I hadn't noticed, but they are beautifully striking!
LOL! That reminds me of a old feud between Landscape and Garden Designers.... ;0)
