When it comes to pendant lighting, apparently size does matter. But these larger-than-life fixtures do more than simply brighten a room. They act as a focal point that simultaneously grounds the space while creating a sense of expansiveness.
Playing with scale is a great way to add visual interest and draw attention away from negative elements, especially in a smaller space. To keep the look from becoming cartoonish, choose a fixture with a simple form and design. Round, cylindrical, or cone-shaped fixtures work well in a room with high ceilings, whereas oblong or elliptical shapes add width to a narrower room with lower ceilings.

Sorry, but #1 and #4 are a bit too "Take me to your leader".
And #2, #3 and #5 look they will be appearing soon on unhappyhipsters.com
The cone of silence!
i like number 1 a lot.
I was just in search of reasonably priced large-scale pendants for my kitchen table. I would have loved 1, 2 or 4. I ended up with the woven lamp from west elm (which I wish was 10% larger): http://www.flickr.com/photos/creativeintheory/4327934913/in/set-72157623219807169/
This works in small spaces too. My friend had a small studio apartment and had a big arc light with a giant kind of chinese lantern like shade (Ikea I think) and it looked great.
@creativeintheory: Your woven pendant lamp looks amazing. From what I can see in the picture, it's large scale but the perfect size for the table and space. Love it!
I like #1 too, but just telling me that it's from World of Interiors, with no link and no manufacturer is frustrating.
The chairs in #2 are pretty awesome. Who makes them?
Number 4 looks like "that's no moon!"
awesome.
