Finding out that you get a long weekend off at the last minute is always a welcome surprise, but it can be frustrating to try and book a last minute vacation rental. Do you have any tips or tricks to finding the perfect getaway in a hurry?
In the past we've found great deals on last minute vacation rentals on Craigslist. A Google search can prove to be overwhelming. Where is the first place you look when you want to procure a quick vacation rental? Got any search tips you'd care to share with the Apartment Therapy community?

Good luck with renting those homes at that price.
VRBO.com and homeaway are usually our last minute go-to spots. beach places and those types are rentals are still pretty hard to come by, but the last minute vacancy rates tend to be a little higher than in hotels/resort type locations.
Try Florida right now.
best website ever
airbnb.com
This is information I have needed for a while and wasn't too optimistic with that Hamptons post starting things off.
So thanks a million thill for sharing your resource. Craigslist has been generally pretty good, but some cities (e.g. Portland, OR) sometimes don't have very many offerings. I saw tons of possibilities for my favorite cities on airbnb.
I always use homeaway.com My family and I have used them over the past several years and have never been let down!
Anything wrong with camping or a road trip?
If you need to fly, picking a place that is at the time off-season helps a lot (like the Caribbean in August). Also last minute cruise fares seem to be pretty good.
The heck with last minute rentals. First I'd like to know how to afford tickets with 2 weeks' notice or less.
Thanks Thill, for the great info! I've just been perusing airbnb's offerings and I'll def use that tip!
Thanks too to mldecarli for the homeaway link! I hadn't seen that one before either! (mind you, my "favorites" is overflowing with villa rental sites...just not the kind that I could actually afford! LOL).
I, like aneelee, have normally used vrbo and had some AWESOME holidays, in fact, we prefer to rent "villas" than stay in hotels or resorts! Depending on the number of guests going it can be both cheaper and a WHOLE lot more fun!
I've stayed in several now (Spain and Jamaica the most memorable) that had been rented by good friends for a month each. All they did was fill all available beds, more or less, with friends, for a week or a few days at a time. It made their holidays virtually rent-free and ours a little cheaper (and certainly more memorable) than any hotel! Of course we paid for airfare, and we knew about it in advance, but if you could travel solo (and separately), or possibly on standby, it's a great way to get outa town for relatively cheap! You'll still have to add in all the peripheral activities as well as food and copious drink, but once you go private, it's hard to go back!!!
Happy Holidays to all!
Sheila!
You already posted a pic of it: The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs is AMAZING! I recently spent a week there and literally didn't leave the grounds. Easy to get in/out of Palm Springs airport (probably easiest from West Coast cities) or a quick drive from L.A.
Highly recommend! (and don't be afraid of the desert heat... The rooms are cool, the patios are covered and the pools are divine!
Hey Molly,
I work for packlate.com. Packlate offers last-minute vacation rental deals and the prices go down closer to check-in. We also offer real-time availability and pricing (unusual in vacation rentals) and bookability with a credit card. I think you will find it to be way better than other sites out there. Check us out!
