I dry my laundry on hangers on my shower curtain rod.
I learned a trick from someone else. You usually fit all of your laundry on a standing drying rack and then put the rest on a shower rod on the patio. I've been lucky that the above patio over hangs mine, so I just stick the shower rod between the over hanging wall and the patio door (the non-moving side of course).
Pish posh to all that silliness. I live in a dry climate, so I just hang my damp laundry on hangers in the closet, making sure I have an inch or so between each garment. They are dry by the next day.
Alternately I hang the wet clothes on hangers and perch them in a line on the lip of the molding over an interior double doorway. I used to have a rolling rack for the same purpose. Kills two birds with one stone...you just move the dry laundry to the closet and you're done.
@ hygebeorht-- just curious, how do you hang your socks from the hangers? I hang clothes to dry on hangers (I agree it saves a step), but haven't yet managed that for socks and underwear...Do tell!
I have the Tvatta rack from IKEA ($39.99). It folds down flat against the wall when not in use. :) It works really well for me in my apartment. I mounted it on the wall in the bathroom. My lease stipulates I can't put laundry out on my balcony to dry since it's out front. What I can't fit on the rack, I put on hangers and hang from the shower curtain rod.
I also have this cute little octopus looking thing that hangs from the rack also from IKEA (Pressa, $4.99) that has 16 clips to dry my dress socks, undies, etc. The "arms" with the clips fold up when not in use so it stores easily with my clothes pins.
Why all this mounting business? I have a nice little collapsible drying rack from Target that gets the job done nicely. It folds up, and I can stash it under the bed, beside the laundry machine, wherever! It's been through lots of moves too.
We have a folding coated metal ikea drying rack, and the socktopus to go with it. It holds a good load and a half of laundry. When we move from our apartment to the house, we plan to install a clothesline for drying sheets and such.
have been looking for an over window rack. Leifheit model looks great.
I love that apartment therapy is doing a segment on laundry - it's the worst part of my week! i have a problem with my shirts getting funny in the shoulders when i hang them up on a hanger in the shower... I'm looking for a super compact version. My NYC apartment is 300 sq ft.. I have no space!
I use http://laundrylocal.com/ for laundry and dry cleaning. if there was a more intelligent solution to the hanger in the shower that doesn't take up space when it's drying - please share!!
Thank you for doing this. If I can save money drying I can have more funnnn!
I like my grandmother’s wooden rack, but you can’t buy them anymore.
The rack is large enough for 2 loads of laundry.
Everything dries overnight next to the wood stove.
I’m trying to convince my husband, a cabinetmaker, to produce them.
