Becoming a homeowner changes your perspective on the space you call home
— at least it has for Laura and Zev. When they moved into their new home in Bernal Heights from the Mission two years ago they began to see their home as a true reflection of themselves. They strayed from the loud, flashy colors they painted on the walls of their previous rental and opted for a simpler, cozier way to express their love for color.
Throughout the space are pops of bold colors filling each room. From the rugs on the floors to Laura’s photos framed with vibrantly painted salvaged window frames, each space feels cozy and comfortable while still reflecting the colors of the couple’s heritage and adventures. Each room reflected a primary color and as I moved closer into the space, I made out the lamp or mug that seemed to be he inspiration for the bright colors. Even their new pet parrot looks like a well-considered design element with his bright green feathers muted behind the white bars of his cage.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Both of us were raised between the beach and the countryside so we like aspects of both of those places.
The items we collect through our travels offer a lot of inspiration. We both like primary colors, rich colors.
The kitchen/dining room space and our garden. We love to cook and do a lot of entertaining and we created space both indoors and out where we can do both of these things.
The limited size of the house.
What Friends Say:
That it looks like we have lived here for years.
We haven't fixed the fan in the kitchen and the smoke alarms go off way too often.
Laura's window-framed photos and the garden space. It was a mess when we moved in and now it is a great space to entertain and enjoy being outside.
Great wine and cheese to entertain our friends.
Figure out what you like and buy items that reflect your interests. Don't just choose someone else's design for your home. Portray who you are through what you own.
Street markets in different places we have traveled through — especially the market in Guadalajara.
