You could follow the Yellow Brick Road or, in Laura Ljungkvist's world, follow the line. Hailing from Sweden, now settled in Brooklyn, Ljungkvist illustrates children's books and invites the reader to not just sit back and read or listen, but to participate by following a line through her detailed, graphic drawings and answer questions about what they see.

Follow the Line was published in 2006 by Viking Children's Books. The idea was revisted the following year in Follow the Line Through the House and will be joined this spring by Ljungkvist's latest, Follow the Line Around the World.

You can learn more about Laura and her other children's books (Toni's Topsy-Turvy Telephone Day and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) at her website where she also offers four free downloads for kids - a coloring page, a tshirt transfer, a memory game and connect-the-dots.

Wow! I'll definitely be checking this series out further. Of her own volition, my 4th daughter used to slowly and carefully trace shapes and letters with her finger whenever we read together and whenever she encountered a sign or poster while we were out and about. I thought it was so neat, and as a result she began recognizing and writing letters a bit early on. Can't wait to see if this is something my toddler son might like to do as well!
