Yes, you read that right. David Cole, an artist and designer based in Brooklyn, NY, has created several different LEGO kitsall hand-assembledto allow you to make your own PETA-approved home decor.
Cole has experience in a wealth of fields; he runs a boutique online publication design studio and worked extensively with interaction design. His foray into LEGO, then, seems like an extension into materiality of his work on the web. For the kits, he hand-illustrates the assembly instructions and sources new and hard-to-find bricks from around the world.
His interest in creating the kits stemmed from what he describes as "an interest in animal forms, and how they render in this geometric style." What's fascinating, though, is that his orders over the holidays came mainly from, as Cole puts it, Midwestern and Southern "women purchasing them for their hunter husbands and sons."
So what, exactly, is the audience for these pieces? Will they sell as a sincere appeal to those interested in their real-world equivalents? Or will hipster parents love them for their kitsch value and buy them for their kids? Or will the Adult Fan of LEGO community (AFOL) embrace them as another grown-up application of the toy?
We'd love to know your take. Sound off in the comments!

I appreciate the creativity but I'm so tired of this taxidermy trend. It's boring already.
First set of antlers I like!
I'm amused by the Pooh Bear-esque taxidermy. I just feel like the trend has been blown out of proportion. Plus, any sort of taxidermy in the nursery seemed a bit creepy to me.
Oh. My. Goodness. My daughter, Liz, needs one of these! For some odd reason, my mom had a deer head in her bedroom and used it to hang-dry her underwear. I hated it. Liz thought it was the Best Thing Ever (tm). My mom died last March, and Liz and I still miss her...so I might get Liz the antlers to remind her of one of those special "Liz and grandma" moments that Mom just doesn't get.
Oh the travesty! How many innocent Legos were slaughtered in the name of whimsy!?! ;)
I'm so tired of people saying they are tired of things. I, for one, LOVE these!!
The deer is the only one I like -- very whimsical
I love them but I concur with the first person's comment. The taxidermy trend is as over as owls, ombre and chevron. It needs to stop.
I love Legos and this is a cute idea, but taxidermy is such a creepy concept to me, there's no way I could do this.
$28 dollar is a bit much, don't you all think?
We have 4-season room with a stone fireplace (it's called the RockShop, because the man who built it was a Geologist & sold rocks to neighborhood kids during the 70's). My husband has wanted a taxidermy head on the RockShop Fireplace for a *LONG* time...
This would be a good tongue-in-cheek gift until we can drop a Grand+ on a real taxidermy item.
For anyone that likes the look of taxidermy and natural objects but can't get past the ick factor -look into antlers. Some antlers are a beautiful white color reminiscent of coral and fall off naturally (or so I was told).
The Pooh-Bear head makes me a little sad, but I love the fox (which I don't guess has to be taxidermy - I'll pretend he stopped by for a visit)! Oh, and for the record, I think I fall in the AFOL category.
Agreeing with Alermy-- $28 for a kit with maybe $3 worth of bricks? And they assemble to a piece the size of your hand? No thanks.
If you want "cute" taxidermy, I think this wins hands down: http://www.etsy.com/transaction/67433078
I love the fox, but I will pretend he is living! Excuse me while I rummage through the kids' legos...
I love that this post shows up on the same page as the "overdone trends" post.
