The birthday cake is one of the most important parts of party planning. We often feature new ways to inject creativity into those tasty treats from rainbow cakes to cake doodling. But why not look to the past for inspiration? That is exactly what Virginie did for her son Leo's birthday cake.
Virginie found inspiration from this Baker's Coconut Animal Cut-Up Cakes Booklet produced in 1959. The end result is adorably imaginative and a unique surprise for your guests... who else will have a cake like this? We love it.

Great job, Virginie, and what a lucky Leo!

Shaw's Original Fir...
WOW!
My mom still has that book somewhere! Every birthday cake my brothers and I got growing up was from there, recipe and decorations followed to a T and we all hated shredded coconut! That picture of the cake made me feel 5 again!
i too hate shredded coconut. i think there are enough sprinkles or frosting tips to omit the nasty coconut :D
that is sooooo cute!
We had the same book too - still exists somewhere in my mom's pantry. Birthday #2 for my little guy will be the giraffe, for sure!
ADORABLE!
My mom makes birthday cakes from this (or a similar) book every year for my girls...daisy, butterfly, hot air balloon...the coconut's not my favorite, but works well for covering big areas with colour. My girls love! =)
I STILL have the dolls that went in a hot air balloon cake my mom made for me. I remember looking through her cake book over and over again. Loved that cake.
this cake is the cutest!!!
My 4th birthday cake was made from this book! I've been trying to convince my mom to give it to me, but she won't part with it....a scanned version is all she'll give me!
I'm not into the coconut part of it, but it's nice to make "character" cakes out of basic shapes and pans we already own. Looking forward to making these for my little one soon!
LOVE it! My in-laws made the cutest inchworm cake for our daughter's 1st birthday. So much more fun than a plain 'ol sheet cake (mmmm sheeet caaake....)
