We've seen a counter made from old books before, and now a library has done the same. Check out the reception desk at the new architecture library at Delft University of Technology built from recycled books and a glass top.
After a devastating fire in the previous Architecture building that wiped out many books, the building had to be rebuilt. The new library contains this wonderful reception desk comprised of books artfully arranged so that some splines are turned out to reveal the title, but also comprised of journals and magazines. A glass top provides a uniform and stable surface and allows the books to show through from below.

i love it
This looks rather cool. And I'm reaaaaaaally starting to get annoyed at those who take their appreciation of books to the level of idolatry and fetishism. No book should ever be recycled or reused? Really? Want my high-school algebra text?
yes, agree with rosenatti on this.
if a book is no longer needed or applicable, what's wrong with recycling it? i remember my (boxes of) school textbooks, could have been enough for 1 big reception desk... :)
I knew the minute I saw the pic that it was Dutch!
It looks terrific.
