The EcoSmart soft white compact fluorescent lived up to its description as soft white. But compared to the 40 watt incandescent control bulb, this bulb was down right dim.
Control Bulb: Sylvania Decor Globe 40w
Primary Use: ambient light
Time of Day Tested: 2:00 p.m.
How It Performed: I use a standard 40 watt bulb as a task light. The light is bright and warm. However, the EcoSmart did not throw enough light to be able to read. The quality of the light seemed gray and weak.
One major bonus to this light is that it burns significantly cooler than the incandescent bulb. I can imagine that this bulb could work well as a soft, ambient light instead of a task light. Also, this bulb will use much less energy than the control bulb.
The bulb was very easy to purchase from Amazon.com and arrived a few days after ordered.

* I feel a fair disclaimer is in order considering how dim this bulb appears. I tested it against a comparable 40 watt incandescent bulb with two different light fixtures because the bulbs have different bases. I tested the Ecosmart against an LED with a similar base in the same fixture and it performed much better. That review is coming soon.
