Changing light bulbs is a pain, so I was very hopeful that with the EcoSmart LED bulbs I'd never again have to change the bulbs on my 12-foot high ceilings. Find out if this EcoSmart bulb will save me from getting out the ladder again, after the jump!
Control Bulb: PAR30 Halogen
Primary Use Overhead track light; spot and ambient
Time of Day Tested: Evening
How It Performed: Much like other EcoSmart bulbs, this PAR30 LED Flood Light was easy to find at my local Home Depot. Track lights are the primary light source in my living room, and because of the track head style it can't fit CFLs, only halogens. The halogens burn out what seems like on a monthly basis, and that combined with tall ceilings make replacement a huge pain. So when I saw that LED equivalents could fit the track heads I was very hopeful that they could be a permanent replacement and totally willing to pay premium to not change them again.
Compared to the control halogen bulb, this LED gave off a much crisper, white light, but not blue or sterile. The LED bulbs actually made my painted white walls look dingy compared to the halogen lit walls, so I'm not sure how an entire LED lit room would fare.
But the biggest problem for this bulb is that the beam spread is too sharp for my needs. The halogen bulb has a nice diffuse beam spread, which provides great ambient light for my large room, but sharp enough to use to highlight wall art. The LED, on the other hand, had a much more distinct beam of light, which would be fine for spot lighting, but not great for general ambient room lighting.
Overall, I think this would make a great spot light, but I'm still still searching for a better LED track light for ambient light.
