The PLUMEN 001
is not your run-of-the mill compact fluorescent — according to its company it's 'the world's first designer low energy light bulb'. So, we were pretty stoked when we found out we'd be testing this crazy looking award-winning bulb — find out if it lives up to the accolades, after the jump
Sylvania Soft Light Incandescent
Reading, table lamp
Time of Day Tested:
How It Performed:
First of all yes, this definitely more expensive than a standard CFL, but we'd say that's because of the unique design. The bulb itself is a work of art, is its own decorative light fixture and needn't be covered with a lamp shade. To combat any mercury issues, Plumen also offers a broken bulb and recycling program (see Plumen's website
for more info).
The bulb is larger than a standard CFL, and therefore might not fit in a regular concealed fixture, but again
, it's meant to be exposed! Also, it looks different from every angle, which is pretty cool. Compared to the incandescent control bulb, the PLUMEN 001 was somewhat dim, and could probably only be used as a decorative light source, or perhaps a reading lamp. The color was nice and warm and not at all like the stereotypical sad, blue compact fluorescent. (Which, as we know, is no longer always the case with CFLs.)
Overall, the PLUMEN 001 would make an interesting decorative light fixture, and definitely a great conversation starter, but is not the best bulb for bright ambient light.
