Designer: Linda Lewis
Location: The Fan — Richmond, Virginia
Hi! We live in a Colonial Revival town home built in 1905 in a section of Richmond known as "The Fan". We purchased this home about two years ago and have renovated the first floor. I am an interior designer and could see the space in my head before the first drawing was prepared.
The process went extremely smoothly except when it came to knowing what to do with the floors. After a few sleepless nights it came to me — paint them. I love coming down the back staircase in the morning with the dogs to greet the day, making coffee and enjoying the view out the windows to the city scape beyond. I have the people, animals and things I love around me. What else could be better? I love to have family and friends over to gather around the island and have a good cackle over the events of the day. It is my dream home and I love to share it.
Thanks Linda!

I LOVE the floor!
Love it! We just relocated from the Fan to Tacoma, and really miss the row homes (though not the heating & cooling bills). Your kitchen has fantastic light, especially when you consider how many brick homes and old trees surround you. And I think you got the floors exactly right.
Gorgeous! I grew up in Richmond and it's wonderful to see the Fan represented in AT. I'm a Fan fan.
Love your kitchen... wondering what kind of backsplash you have, it looks white in some pictures and then glass blue and grey in others.
Linda - I'm from Richmond!! The church I grew up in is in the Fan, on Grove Ave. I love that part of town :) It's magical... especially at Christmas.
Your kitchen is one of the best I've seen on here. I especially love the island and the lighting.
The fan I remember didn't look like this! I'm a VCU grad and lots of my buddies rented in the fan...it was still a dump in the 80's (mostly). Such a beautiful historic area, glad to know it's on the up and up. I miss Richmond!
So pretty. Can we see the rest of the house, too?
Yay! I lived (rented) in "The Fan" for ten years and loved every minute of it! I am in the "near west end" now but my dream is to one day retire to "The Fan". Awesome job!
Love the kitchen. Love "The Fan"
The floors are a great idea, as is doing the island in a different wood to the other cabinets to make it look more like a piece of furniture.
Oh my - the answer to my question as to what to do with our floors in our early 1900s kitchen! Beautiful kitchen - thanks for sharing!!
Perfection....now I want to see The Fan area!
Beautiful, although I can't get past the weird location of the microwave, hah. Well, I guess it keeps it stylishly out of sight.
The microwave shown is in a drawer configuration, allowing for use from the top rather than from the front so it's also very functional.
Overall the images represent a wonderful and inviting living space.
I'm not sure I agree with the painting of the wood floors in the kitchen, especially if the flooring was original to the house. How many times do we hear about someone tearing up carpet or sanding a previously painted floor to discover the beauty beneath.
