Name: Lisa
Location: East Lakeview - Chicago, Illinois
My former place was featured in a House Call about how I downsized from a Dallas house to a Chicago apartment. Last year, I bought my current condo and faced a whole new set of decorating challenges.
I had to learn to decorate in an open concept space that includes a kitchen, dining room, living room and entryway. I had to select harmonious colors and styles while keeping the look interesting. You will notice that I took more chances with color in this place. While I kept my beloved Quietude, using it in the dining room, the bedrooms are painted much deeper colors, as is the entryway. The condo is 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath and is laid out in a very functional floor plan that I believe people would find useful.
Thanks, Lisa!

Lisa's Latest Lovely [Lair?] in Lakeview (sorry, couldn't resist going for unbroken alliteration!)
WHERE did you get that Bubble Lamp print? Love it!!! All of your art actually, from what I can tell....
Please tell me more about the gray sideboard with white drawers.....!!!
Thanks, all!
@averymckenzie: The bubble lamp art is my own photo blown up on canvas. For a small price, you can have one, too!
@mssmith: The sideboard is actually made up of three Ikea cabinets, which are a dark brown wood with white lacquer doors. I can't seem to find them on the Ikea web site, but they are in the workspace section of the store.
I love the blue/green paint color - could you share the brand and hue name?
@alyssa.rae: It's Plumage by Martha Stewart, though I believe I had it color-matched in Benjamin Moore paint. I got the idea from younghouselove, as they also painted their guest room that color: http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/02/holy-buckets/

Such a lovely, happy home! I love your mix of furniture styles and your use of color, especially the bedroom wall color. You get nice natural light, too!
Lovely! Great style, use of color and art, plus a very welcoming and homey feel. Brava!
I'm not going to list everything I love about this home - I love it all!! Nice job, Lisa.
Thanks, NotStacy, Lourdes and Violet!
Very nice! I think it calls for a full house tour. I would love to see the floor plan that you mentioned. I like those kind of things..helps me put things in perspective. Love the colors you chose!
Thanks, Tracy! I would be happy to provide a full house tour if requested.
I appreciate a decor that is simultaneously beautiful, soothing, and liveable; Lisa's entire apartment reflects all three qualities in every detail.
I'm so excited to see these color combinations! I'm in the process of transitioning from my highly-traditional color scheme to something way more modern, yet still keeping with the traditional vibe of my furniture. I've been working with lots of greys and am feeling really intimidated about getting them right. I also love dark paint, but have never lived with dark grey -- this gives me great hope that I'll LOVE it!! Do you have any input on how much lighting wattage is necessary when painting in dark grey?
Thanks, Duana! I appreciate your compliments!
Hey, Mock, how excited to see your transition to a more modern look! I think the lighting depends on what kind of room it is. My dark grey room is a master bedroom, and I have a small light on either side of the bed, as well as an overhead light fixture (pictured), as well as another lamp behind my reading chair. I think if your living room was this color, you would want more/brighter lighting than that. You may want to just see how things look after you paint, then add lighting as needed for your room. Good luck!
Lisa, I love what you did with your bookshelf!! And that dark green/blue color in the bedroom is gorgeous. So happy for you that you are pursuing your passion!
Carmen
Thanks so much, Carmen!
the whole space is beautiful. I love the mix of traditional dark wood pieces with modern color. I would like to curl up in that bed. Bedroom is my fav.
Thanks so much, Sarah!
I am struck by how you achieve fresh, contemporary and comfortable. I've always loved a blend traditional and modern, but I struggle with how to put it together. What's the first step in your design process?
Thank you so much! My process typically starts with one item I love--in the case of my living room, the rug. In my bedroom and the guest room, there were wall colors I loved and built the rooms around. I have learned to use neutrals for the larger furniture items and add color through pillows, accessories, etc., which is more cost effective. I like to think about what color should be layered with whatever the primary color is in the room, then choose items in that color. As far as blending traditional and modern, I think the trick is paying attention to the pieces you acquire and how they fit with the whole--put differently, how they tip the scale on your eclectic mix.
Hope this helps! :)
I love the paint colors! And I absolutely love the light fixture in the bedroom! Wow!
Great colors and mix of vintage & new. That dining room table is fab!
Thanks, Leli and Melsy!
I love how the paint colors are darker, but the apartment still seems light and airy. It's a combination I struggle with.
Thanks, Cheri! I think the key to keeping dark rooms light and airy is good lighting and bright accents. Hope that helps!
