Name: Lisa
Location: River North — Chicago, Illinois
When I moved to this 877 square feet Chicago apartment last year, I downsized from a 2048 square feet house in Dallas. My tastes had shifted to a more modern look, but I still love some of the old pieces I brought with me.
The biggest challenge was getting the look I wanted while fitting it into a much smaller space. I really love my apartment because it combines the old and the new in a way that makes me happy, is very functional and celebrates this new phase of my life in Chicago.
Thanks Lisa!

Sprout Side Table
I loved the lamps! Great space.
Beautiful and well done, looks very airy, modern but warm at the same time... I downsized as well from a two story 2000+ to a 600 rental. Since I had gotten divorced & left almost all furniture behind, I did have to start anew and I did have trouble with scale at first.
Where did you get that painting in your living room? I love it!
Ooh, the nightstands are cute! Source? I also like the rugs, and the whte countertop with the dark cabinetry in the kitchen is a nice combination.
I think the art in the bedroom looks bit unbalanced; are you still working on that wall?
@em_470 - ditto.
LOVING the paint in living room. What is the brand and color name...?
The bedroom is my favorite. Love how the shapes in the ceiling lamp are echoed in the pattern of the top bedlinen. And what a headboard!
Great job on downsizing. The whole place looks relaxing and modern.
Would love to get the source list for the lamps...both the ones in the bedroom and the one on the cute little round table. Lovely space.
You did a lovely job! I'd also like to know where you got that painting in the living room?
Color coding the books?? Genius!!
What a lovely space! Very well put together. Love the rugs, where did you get them?
Nice space!
Congratulations. Love the living room carpet with the walls. Your living room looks so comfortable and inviting.
Love love love the barn painting in the living room, and the ones in the bedroom as well. Source(s), pretty please??
Nicely done! Love splashes of pattern in the art and accessories.
hmmmmm....stealing idea of arm chair next to bed (nice patchwork pillow too!)
You are spot on with your furniture arrangement! Perfect!
I have a similar dining table - but I added a glass top.. It now seats 4 comfortably and I can move the glass top off the stow away. (behind the TV)
But your place is lovely.
Love the painting above the TV. Not so much a fan of the displayed DVDs. Overall, a lovely and comfortable home!
Great place. FYI for all asking about the lamps, I have seen them on Lamps Plus.com. Sorry, can't remember the name. . .
Going to add a comment to ask for source of the painting in the living room and the two in the bedrooms. they are lovely.
great job with your downsizing - we are going through the same thing here in about 2 weeks (2000 sqft to 1000 sqft).
River North ROCKS! Welcome!
nice paint color in living room..very cozy and mod..
Looks very comfortable and functional. I like how the space is uncluttered, but there's still some personality... shown through the artwork and the colorful rugs.
Love the table and chair in what I would call a little "nook", but I'd ditch the rug,it takes away from the "sleek" look of the arrangement. I'd also ditch the flowers and lamp, they take away from the painting, maybe a floor lamp in the corner instead?
I've never seen that type of table used in that type of arrangement, but its spot on!
Oh, and I'd kill for that kitchen counter!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, thank you all for the nice comments! I will do my best to answer your questions:
1. The living room and bedroom lamps are from Lamps Plus, the same style in two sizes.
2. The painting in my living room is by a Chicago-based artist, Marketa Sivek. You can see her work at MarketaSivek.com.
3. The nightstands and bed came from a now-defunct store in Dallas, Texas, called Urban Home. There is a tag inside that says they were made by South Cone Trading Company in Peru.
4. I cannot take credit for the kitchen cabinets and counter, though I do like them--it's a rental and came with them.
5. The rug is by Madeline Weinrib.
6. Yes, I am also dissatisfied with my bedroom walls--I have not gotten the art quite right.
7. The living room paint is Quietude by Sherwin-Williams.
8. The bedroom farm paintings are by FranceGallery on Etsy. I learned when I received them that the artist is in Illinois, very close to the small town where I grew up!
9. I am also not crazy about the displayed DVDs, but I have a lot of them, like watching them and couldn't find any more useful storage solution than this. I have considered color-coding them like the books to improve their appearance, but worried that might be too much.
I think I covered everything--thanks again! I am beaming.
I too downsized about 3 years ago and it was rough.. but I have to tell you, you did a great job with your space. It's like- looking at it, you accepted it for what it is- Good Job! Love the rug.
Such an inviting space. You've really made it a home. I love the Buffalo Gals piece over the dining table and the bed linens. You have an eye for color.
To clarify #6 above: I love the art in my bedroom, just not the arrangement of it. The bedroom is quite small compared to my old bedroom and I haven't mastered making it look decorated while not claustrophobia-inducing.
@ LisaAD --
It's a drastic step, but I ditched my DVD cases and filed the discs in a (really big) CD binder. I've never missed the cases, and it's so satisfying to zip the book closed and put it away. If you have a ton of movies, you can get a couple of binders. Problem solved!
where did you get that buffalo Gals poster? love it! anyone know? Thanks!
Leah, I got that poster years ago in an antique store on the square in Weatherford, Texas. It is actually a painted canvas, as opposed to being a poster. Out of curiosity, I just Googled it and was able to find one for you to buy! The web address is too long to repeat here, but just Google "Buffalo Gals" canvas and you'll find it.
I LOVE the color in your living room, and am looking for something similar to do in our bedroom. Any way you remember the color and brand? Thanks!
Sorry, I did forget to specify that I meant paint color!
Thanks so much for finding that canvas! I kept searching buffalo gals and not "canvas" and it would not come up. thanks!
Lisa, you've done a beautiful thing! Thank you for sharing a bit of yourself with us. I get the feeling that you truly live/dwell with joy in your new home!
Downsizing has been revelation for me ... sifting & simmering down until what's truly loved was revealed to me. Lessons learned! I grew up in the Chicagoland area & visit often; but, haven't lived there since I left for college several years ago. Like you, I'm in a new phase of my life & anticipate moving (back) to the Chicagoland area. I would love to learn more about your relocation ...
... swooning over all of the real & rich materials & the contrasting color/time/style mix that just flows. Love headboard, leather sofas, dark wood (let's just say ALL the furniture :-), the rugs, lamps, tulip quilt/coverlet & that miniature shopping cart!!!
Beautiful home. Love the colors of the artwork, walls, rugs, etc. Well done.
Love your sofas. I recently resized and have not replaced mine yet. What's your source and do you have suggestions for other apartment sized sofas?
Thanks, redih! The living room couch and chair are from Macy's--the Milan. They are actually not apartment-sized, but a regular sized couch and chair. I wish a little that it was a sectional, but this offers more flexibility. I have thought about ordering the matching ottoman so it feels a bit more like a sectional.
Really calm & lovely. Great use of patterns.
I love your living space, and I'm not sure if anyone mentioned...it looks like you have quite a view! What floor are you on? A+ on spacial arrangements in such a small space, I am currently dealing with 700 ft with a messy boyfriend :)
Hey, achupp, yes, I do enjoy a great view, which has really spoiled me now that I'm looking for a place to buy. I'm on the 19th floor and face due east. Good luck with that messy boyfriend! :)
