little A's lap desk

Faced with an 18 hour cross-country drive, Merrilee was struck by inspiration to make this clever lap desk for her son, "little A", to use in the car. One glance down at our own lap desk confirms her assertion that commercially available lap desks are "lacking in either design or functionality."

The base of her desk is masonite which we admit we had to look up, but it seems to be easy to find. Her sisters helped her figure out how to sew it in such away that the masonite can be removed so the rest can be washed easily. She included a handle for easy carrying and gave it a personal touch by embroidering her son's initial. You can see more detailed photos of this nifty creation here.

Merrillee tells us she may draw up a pattern for the lap desk (ooh! ooh!) which means you should subscribe to or stalk her blog, MerMag which, trust us, is no hardship as it's filled with lots of inspiration and gorgeous photographs (many of her beautiful family). One more thing - she has a lovely shop (Tuesday Mourning) worth checking out.

Update: She did it! Find Merrilee's tutorial here.
