Q: I've just been re-reading all your helpful tips on having a party since we're having our first housewarming in our NYC apartment. The suggestions for lighting and structure were definitely an education. However, the major problem we're facing is that, when facing the living room, the couch is on the left, facing the TV & TV table on the right, with the windows (and large radiator) straight ahead in the middle. Moving the couch in front of the window would take up tons of space because of the radiator. Putting chairs at the entrance of the room would cut off the flow between kitchen and living room. We have no idea how to make this space more inviting so that those sitting down don't just face the TV. Any tips?

Would you be able to move the TV somewhere for the night? I would stash it in a closet or bedroom and use the TV table as an extra bar/buffet/whatever. Without the TV as a place to focus on, you could put some chairs opposite the couch to encourage conversation.
Exactly what I was going to suggest-move the t.v. This would be easier also!
I third the move the TV suggestion! Hide it in a bedroom and put chairs where the TV was - it'll foster lots of lovely conversation.
I think there's a trick to party seating just like there is to lighting. You want to create areas where people can get off their feet, eat some food, and still have a conversation without obstructing the flow of standing guests through the room.
For example, if your table is loaded up with appetizers, pull away the chairs and group in (in twos or threes) in out-of-the-way corners.
So, I would say don't worry about the TV unless it's really in the way, and keep the couch wherever is best for your room flow. I can't remember ever caring what I was looking at when seated at a party -- it's all about who you're sitting with.
@akay - that's great advice.
If it's too big/heavy to move, put seating or a snack table in front of the TV. Don't be afraid to float the couch a bit. People tend to sit against the walls in a large room - break that up with a table right in the middle and floating furniture/seating.
Most people will gravitate towards the food/drinks/kitchen anyway. I would focus on opening up that space!
Don't stress too much - no one's going to judge you on your seating arrangements, they'll be too busy having fun!
