Though this living room was off to a great start with all the wonderful mid-century furniture, Apartment Therapy DC Flickr Group member Diademydo made some updates to the space that included a reupholstered chair, a new rug and lots of pillows, artwork and accessories to pull the space together.
The chair was re-upholstered in a neutral fabric and new throw pillows soften the angular lines of the furniture. I'm glad to see that the orange wasn't abandoned! It was brought back into the space through the pillows and new artwork. The new pulls on the dresser give this older piece a more modern twist, and the new rug has and organic shape to offset the rest of the rectangular furnishings.
This room is a great example of the difference just a few changes can make to any space.
Thanks Diademydo!

I hate to say it, but I liked the orange chair better before.
I liked the chair before. lol.
i also preferred the chair before -- gave the room a pop & some personality!
The new look is OK and I like the pillows, but what a shame to change the orange chair. The framed kuba cloth above the sofa competes too much with the brick for me.
I preferred the bright orange fabric chair against the exposed brick. It had pizazz!
The neutral fabric is lovely in an understated way, and it's definitely a more grown up choice for the chair. Still, I can't help but feel like it lost some of its pop factor.
Apart from that, the rest of the room is nicely styled.
like the room, but chair was better in orange.. or at least some color. I'm not a fan of matching the colors of sofa and chairs.
I have to agree w/ ralapack - Had the chair been left in its original orange upholstery, the orange hues in the pillows would have pulled the place together so much better...
...Or had it been redone in an Indigo Blue, it would have been a perfectly cool contrast to the pillows as well as the existing orange hues in the brick, floors and center table - but now it's just a mismatched beige to the existing sofa.
Ooh, I agree, the orange fabric was much more fun.
But that coffee table is awesome!
I think all the new accessories are really well done.
I'm in the "keep the orange" camp, too.
Too bad about the orange chair...it was rather groovy looking! They could have reupholstered it in a similar orange fabric...its a shame they chose a rather bland beige.
Orange chair was better, but the frames and the pillows complete the place. The paper lamp.. not so much.
I really like the textures of the lamp and brick wall as well as the calming effect that the neutral tones emit. Very nice!
It's a lovely sea of beige.
I know people that do these before and afters just looove to hear how the "before" shots look better...
The orange color is the reason why this chair was cool. Even if the fabric was dirty/damaged, reupholstering it in beige instead of orange (or another bright color) takes away a bit of its character.
Loved the orange chair!
The orange picked up the orange hues in the coffee table (at least in the picture) and would have gone great with those pillows and the orange in the brick. But the after picture is a bit calmer.
love the brick art on the wall! The orange was so retro and old fashioned. The after look is much better!
Yes, the orange of the chair is much missed in the after. Also not a fan of the tower of boxes - is that artwork or something? Or did they just not have anywhere else convenient to store all their boxes?
Nice job- actually it makes a space more cohesive and look bigger to have all the upholstery in the same color. It make a great foil for coloful art, pillows and rugs.
Could use a bright orange mohair throw tho' and that paper tower is overpowering and rather awkward.
I am a defector here, I guess, because as time passes I have become one for a matched set of furniture. I'm all for having a few pieces thrown in to break it up, but I'm not a fan of the room full of "found" furniture. I think matching the colors of the furniture, but differing the fabric used, gives the room texture and cohesiveness. Perhaps another orange chair or ottoman could offer the character that everyone seems to crave, but I appreciate that the two pieces that anchor the room actually seem to go together.
I liked the before better, especially the original pulls on the bureau.
Definitely more of a fan for the After look. The artwork selection looks great against the brick... the zigzag patterns give the wall a sense of vibrancy. The room looks more cozy now. Nice job!
The space looks great, but I'm sad for the loss of the orange chair.
Resurrect the pulls! I miss the orange - maybe the camera is hiding something about the chair but the color and shape were amazing.
Love the wall art in the space
designersdesigner , if the chair was such a badly made piece of crap, why spend the money reupholstering it instead of just finding a better one? The bright color wasn't good because it was "cute" and retro, it was good because it brought out the warmth of the wood table and the floorboards which made the room feel cozy in spite of the spare lines of the furniture.
Unfortunately I think the redo was a flop. The pillows are great, but that's really it. Sucked all the color out of the room with that chair, the bulky lamp is an awkward height and crowded into the corner, and the art behind the sofa is a weak useless medium size that just occupies up the space without doing it any good. Sorry!
Thanks for the comments everybody! The chair was not a piece of crap, it's a really well made piece. The upholstery was beyond dirty. Actually, it was worn beyond saving-- frayed and dirty. When we get around to it the sofa's up for a redo in the linen, too. The itchy wool is uncomfortable. As for the beige. I like it.
