If you are truly working with a small space then a single (twin) bed might be an option. But just because you're going solo doesn't mean your room has to look childish. From guest bedrooms to grown-up pads, here's a look at singles done right.
You can see how some of these rooms have captured and English countryside appeal. Others used single beds for a minimal, modern look. And the yellow bed might be pushing the limits in terms of size (looks like a small double) but come on! It's yellow and purty.

Lovely, but numbers 3 and 8 look full-size to me.
What's the difference between single and twin? Also like the other commenter 3 and 8 are full sized for sure.
I always had a full bed even when I was single. Twin beds are shorter than a full, and at 5'11 I am too tall for a twin. Plus its nice having a full bed because there is enough space to cuddle up if a visitor does come over. ;-)
There's something depressing about a twin bed for an adult. Perhaps it's the intimation of celibacy? Unless I were really starved for space, I would go with a full or queen.
@Jose A, depends on where you are, but in the US, twin/single and full/double are the same length (75 inches). XL twin is slightly longer (80 inches).
@R_Claw, twin and single are the same thing.
Some of you may remember this song for ye olden tymes:

One of my favorite beds ever is a twin, at my in-laws'. It was custom made for my husband when he was a (very tall) teenager, so it's long, and tucked into the eaves of their Cape Cod. There are bookshelves all around, and a skylight above, and a window on the side. Who needs company?
I'm in love with these, particularly 3 and 8. At nearly 6 ft. tall, however, anything smaller than an XL twin is just not possible. By the way, here are a couple of examples of just this idea from Tom Delavan. The second link, I think, is his own home and that bed might be full sized.

8 gives me inspiration. My bed is metal and almost identical and I have been brainstorming what color to paint it.
One thing about twin/single beds that I like is the extra space in a room that they give you.
Woops. Here's the link to Delavan's apt:

Agreed that #3 & #8 are full size beds, but am I the only one that thinks #1 might be as well? It's hard to tell from the angle, but it just seems wider than a twin.
Also, being 6' tall, I can't do the twin bed. I did have an XL twin in college though and it was pretty great. I could maybe see having that if you needed the space, but personally I don't ever want to give up my queen bed - need the length & enjoy the room when I have company.
Oh, this post and comments made me chuckle. When my husband and I started dating we were working for a rafting company that provided housing for its guides. Those beds were super long (which was nice b/c we're both around the 6' mark), but were super narrow (less than a twin!). Spooning was the only way to sleep! lol We have since "upgraded" to a full and find it's just right for space, both ours and the rooms.
Yeah, I have to agree with heather77. A twin is depressing.... it would make me feel like I was staying with my parents or something.
A lot of old beds (turn of the 20th century and earlier) were 3/4 beds. My great grandmother had them upstairs in her farmhouse.
I have twin beds in my guest room, so if you want to come visit.....
I love twin beds. Whenever I see a pair of matched twin beds in a room it makes me feel like all is right in the world. The solitary twin bed sometimes seems off-kilter, unless the room is really really small.
Twin beds aren't so bad! As a full sized adult at 5' it's perfect! That and I generally don't have too much "company" or go elsewhere so it's really a non-issue. The nice thing about being small and having a twin sized bed is that it's very cozy. You don't feel like you're in a giant bed. Plus, it saves so much space!
P.s. I've had the same bed since I can remember. No bed frame though, just the mattress. Still hunting for the perfect frame.
A twin is fine for a priest or a guest room only.
It is a quality of life issue.
I slept in a "Jenny Lind" bed at my parents until I was 20 - also known as a 3/4. Of a twin. Good luck finding sheets for *that*.
Going to college meant there was suddenly room for a guest in my oh-so-spacious twinXL!
I had a twin bed for most of my early 20's. I was sharing bedrooms, and when I had my own room it was tiny. I was SO excited when I finally got my full size bed. It's the perfect compromise for me; bigger than a twin (with room for one more) but still space-saving.
I have a twin bed, and it's just the right size for me and my cat in our 120 sq ft space. I have room for a desk, dresser, bookcases and a cozy armchair because I have a small bed.
Both three and eight are full size beds - and I'm almost certain number one is a 3/4 bed. For adults, I think the correct bed size is 3/4 to a full size for a single person. Twin beds tend to scream non-commitment to me - it's like telling whomever you are with "oh there's no room for you in this bed so there's also no room for you in my life".
failjolesfail -- A 3/4 bed is actually bigger than a twin...look it up.
Here's a great reason to have twin beds:
I'm a single, 44 year old guy. I live in a one-bedroom apartment. Every time a good friend or my father or a cousin comes to visit - guess who has to sleep on the SOFA in the living room for a week because you can't both sleep in the double. So I've decided to get two twin beds in my bedroom so that I can welcome guests whenever I like to my one bedroom home and everybody will be comfortable. And - if I get lucky - I"ll just push em together!
Wow! really nice creativity. I loved it. This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing and keep posting!
