Kathy and Dan Allen of Wisconsin had a dream to support themselves after retirement by farming asparagus. They purchased land in preparation and then the unexpected happened — Kathy lost Dan to an unexpected and highly aggressive form of lung disease. In honor of their dream, Kathy trudged on and is having a blast being fully submerged in farming life.

Kathy is doing what she loves and is able to help support friends and family members as her operation has grown large enough to take on several employees. The still do everything by hand from planting and harvesting to sorting and shipping. This homegrown operation is a thriving one and making the Midwest a great place to live during asparagus season!

Make sure to check out their harvesting cart and giant spinning wheel in their sorting room, both of which make life much easier and keep everyone in touch with their harvest. Even though Kathy has come through much adversity, she's been able to support her community with homegrown, local goods all the while making a living and cherishing the dream she once shared with her husband.
