Though his clients may be high-profile (the entire Kardashian clan, Ryan Seascrest, Michael C. Hall, America Ferrera), Jeff Andrews is, like the interiors he designs, very low-key. Perhaps it's a by-product of his former life — as a choregrapher — but his knack for taking dramatic ideas and distilling them into their most livable components, rich with texture and layers of color, is his most recognizable signature.

Canadians take a lot of ribbing, but one look at Tamara Kaye-Honey's work will put an end to that. The former Northerner, who moved to Los Angeles in 2003, quickly made a name for herself. This is a woman who knows what she's doing. Her interiors are traditional without being stuffy, she knows how to use a vintage piece without getting mired in the vernacular of the past, and she has a former fashion buyer's flair for mixing pattern and shape without it looking overly theatrical or clownish. - What I Love About My Small Home:
- I'm an artist, designer, and writer, as you can probably guess from my floor plan, and my place is the perfect cocoon for being creative. I used to live in a smaller unit in the building, and decorated it pretty darn nice. So when the tenants in this unit moved out (they had it decorated in "squalor chic"), it was easy to convince my awesome landlord to upgrade the floors, the ceiling fixtures, the window treatments... and let me pick them out! If it's not a lot of square footage, it doesn't take a big investment from her to make a huge return in the future, when she rents it out after I leave. The small space also forces me to curate (overused word of the decade) really carefully, and make smart choices about what I bring into it.
For those among you who are just be starting out, hoping to one day make a name for youself in the world of interior design, the story of Annie Kelly is relatable. Trained as an artist, she became a color consultant. It was after images of her own home were published that she began to attract clients, who wanted her style — unusual color combinations, Asian elements (the influence of mentor Tony Duquette) and a casual/glamor mash-up that seems to be the special province of the Australians — for their own (though it wasn't until a renovation she had worked on, Frank Lloyd Wright's La Miniatura in Pasadena, was featured on the cover of Architectural Digest that she realized that she'd changed professions!).

With a perfectly-matched duo, it's hard to think of one without the other: Batman and Robin, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, Abbot and Costello, Sonny and Cher. To that list, add Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield. The always-impeccable Ron Woodson and the perenially elegant Jaime Rummerfield are as sophisticated as the interiors they create under their Woodson & Rummerfield House of Design banner. Filtering the glamor of old Hollywood through a modern sensibility, their luxurious interiors are colorful and sleek, textural and whimsical.

- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love that this studio has non-traditional features that give it character. The vaulted ceilings give the illusion of a bigger space, while the balcony is a nice place to enjoy the La Jolla sunshine and sea breezes. The loft is a neat room as it is only accessible by ladder, but still provides adequate room for guests to sleep. The elevated narrow-rectangular side room connected to the kitchen was an added bonus which I have turned into an office/storage space. This side room also has vaulted ceilings. Both the loft and office area have round windows too, which is something you don't see every day. To furnish my space I chose mostly used/consignment furniture (as I like mid-century furnishings and Southern California is a great resource for these vintage finds). I have hung wall art that I have both purchased and made myself. I also love my murphy bed, which can be folded into the wall if I need extra space to entertain.

- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love that my apartment is a neutral, boxy space, which makes it very adaptable. It allows me to entertain, make art, experiment with design, work, and relax, all functional components for my happiness. Living on a hill with an amazing view of downtown Los Angeles, and living only 2 miles from work, close enough to commute by bicycle every day, is a rarity for LA. Even though I do pay more for rent than in the Midwest, I love the fact that I don’t have any heating or cooling bills! After moving from Milwaukee to Los Angeles a few years ago, I had to learn to live in less than half of what I was used to. 836 square feet meant having to cull my hard earned and thrifted design collection to make sense. Balancing form and function through patience, persistence, hard work, invested decision-making and over a decade of upgrading, I’ve been able to achieve a deluxe refuge even though my income falls below the bottom third bracket nationally. I’m passionate about my small living space!
