Reader Gillian sent in pictures of her new locker pantry: During the renovation of our kitchen, we made the choice to only have lower cabinets. We love the look but soon found ourselves short on space, specifically pantry space. Instead of adding the upper cabinets we had avoided, we sunk a set of six half sized lockers into the wall between our kitchen and powder room…
…The lockers not only provide ample food storage space, they have made organizing simple too. We now have a baking locker, a canned goods locker, a kids snack locker and even a (locked) liquor locker.
Thanks Gillian!
A great storage solution and I personally love that they are magnetic — making it easy to keep lists and recipes near at hand.

Commercial Flour Sa...
I love it! Oh, how I wish I could that!
Love the colors and the fun look!
How clever of you! I love it.
love your light fixture too -- homemade?
If I do a renovation this will for sure be included .... I love that they are simple to organize too ! A
ugh, jr. high.
No thanks.
Which locker has my jockstrap and old tennis shoes?
Cool idea... looks great!
I love it! Can we please see the rest of this fabulous kitchen???
I had a hard enough time getting books out of my locker in school. I can't imagine trying to find spices back there, or anything else for that matter. Cute, but no thanks.
Lovely. Seems as if it's got great storage inside!
However, I'm more concerned about what's going on to the right of the lockers. What is that line that looks like it's running from the ceiling to the floor? Is that a large crack in the wall? Also, what is that bird nest above the island? Is that a lighting fixture?
bepsf - I believe the the locker on the end towards the door has your jockstrap and tennis shoes in it, which possibly might have caused the crack in the wall. :P PewPew
I love the creativity, but it just doesn't feel warm and inviting like a kitchen should...
Ha! You caught me! That "crack" is just a spot in the wall that isn't quite finished yet. One more skinny piece of drywall and we're done. The light is half DIY. The frame is a light from IKEA that we added to with gobs of white Christmas lights.
I love the idea, but would have gotten it powdercoated a cool color like a red or orange or chartreuse green!
I agree with urbangrandolagirl...a different bold color would look less "high school". Otherwise, a very creative idea for storage.
The lockers are too incongruous for me. They would fit into this kitchen better if the decor around them also integrated found objects with a nostalgic undertone. I could envision them in an Anthropologie-style spread, but in their sparse corner, it's obvious that they were an afterthought.
Except for the light fixture (which, Khatam, I also find disconcerting -- a little too DIY messy), the kitchen lacks the eclectic quality that would make the lockers appear well incorporated.
I encourage you to push the envelope further in order to make the lockers work. Think bold or even mismatched wallpaper and vintage kitchen tools. I see you already have a cheese grater on display over the doorway; seek out vintage toasters, eggbeaters, bottle drying racks, ice cream churns. I can just see them all on a ledge shelf right above those lockers. Then it all becomes a cohesive collection instead of an afterthought.
I like the lockers, but I wonder if they're really enough space. Are there shelves inside?
I love the idea, but gray lockers make me think of sweaty sneakers and forgotten bagged lunches. I think if these were
painted white or maybe green they would look awesome!
the lockers remind me unpleasantly of grade school. i think this kind of novel storage would fit better in a child's bedroom or playroom.
also, the sound of lockers slamming is really loud and annoying. it's hard to close one quietly.
I like the lockers, though I would love them in a great color... but I thought, based on their location near the door, that they were for the kids coats and shoes and stuff when they came home after school.
This is only a good idea if you've forgotten your own school days... it was always such a pain in the butt to wrestle anything in or out of my lockers. The "doorway" is smaller than the "room" which means you can't pack to the edges. Totally impractical for kitchen storage.
I love the lockers idea, but I'd want to use them as lockers, not just for kitchen cooking stuff. Bottom 2 for the kids to stash their coat, backpack, etc. Top 2 for mom and dad (keys, wallet, gloves, etc.), and save the remaining 2 for whatever else. I'm sure locker-organizing technology is far more advanced than my middle-school days, and a DIYer could make some stylish and useful organizing of that narrow vertical space!
I'm mixed on this as well... cool idea, but then I just think of how loud those things are when you slam the door (as compared to how softly those new cabinet draws probably shut).
Love it.
But I love the wooden block-as-counter SO MUCH!!!
I think they look great! I bet any noise issues could be alleviated with some thin camera felt along the edges. And I like the gray, especially with that light above it.
Yay for being creative. Boo for using lockers. Lockers make me think of smelly gym clothes rotting away in there.
Were it me, I'd just excavated the space and put in basic shelving.
I love them! I loathe upper cabinets myself and these are a great solution to fitting in more storage where there wasn't room before. I also love the gray with the bold blue cabinets! Wish I could steal this idea.
I think the whole room is pretty awesome. Yes, I would paint the lockers a bold color too. The hanging xmas light thing looks cool, would love to see it lit up.
Oh man, this is just the best idea for a pantry I've seen in ages!
lovelovelove
I think it's a great idea! I like the grey, but another color would have been great too. I do agree with others that I also had trouble getting books out sometimes, but I guess this works for them.
Just love industrial touches in a home. School lockers are always at the top of that list. Love how they are used here!!!
Love light fixture! School lockers can be paited and will look good.
If they were free-standing, I might not like them so much. But inset flush with the wall makes them look more "on purpose" and slightly less casual. I like the kitchen. It's a little bit industrial/country with some vintage/crafty in there too. It's unique, well executed and reflects the owners personalities. Well done, you!
cute! i agree that a candy primary color might make a better fit
I, too, like the light fixture. The lockers, as well, but it's the light I'm going to try to recreate. nice.
As a fellow lockers-at-home person, I say very cool, and love that you recessed them! Mucho magnetic surface is a bonus, too.
OMG that is a great kitchen! Love the tile, love the lockers and LOVE the back door! :)
I like that this re-purposes something. And for what it's worth, I loved my locker--loved outfitting it with shelves and posting pics in it. It was my own little world.
. . . but I agree with annelizp (@ 4:46) about the 'doorway' being smaller than the 'room', and some of the other practical considerations. Maybe a bit of LED lighting inside (when opened) would counter the feel of inaccessibility?
I'd love to see doors-open pics of how you're using them--shelving ideas, how containers fit inside, etc.
regardless of all that, thanks for the great idea.
my bad, just saw the other pic does show a bit of interior. Thanks!
I think they look great! Thanks for sharing.
In case you ever want to change the colors, I saw a photo once where someone stripped the paint off some lockers, exposing the metal underneath. It looked amazing!
I like them! And as for the quality of lockers as storage... well, you don't plan to fill them with Trapper Keepers, do you?
Where does one go to buy lockers, anyway?
I'm trying to design the next place I move into to be roomate friendly. The locker storage area is a great solution to help keep food items separate.
I am so confused when people ask questions on these posts, that are already known facts whether stated in the text, or shown in a picture?!
That aside, I love this idea. But I am overly partial to industrial in living/kitchen area. The more concrete and metal, the better.
If they were in my kitchen (which could be a possibility, given we are house hunting for an apartment in need of love atm) I would make the most of the magnetic abilities inside and out, especially useful with kids. I'd probably also invest in a few wall decals/stickers. But I really love that colour grey. At least they didn't go for the god-awful beige colour of all the lockers at my old high school!
