Name: Jules Escalona, Co-owner of Citizen Space, and Henry Deleon, Concept Designer for Elastic.tv
Location: Downtown Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,400 square feet
Years lived in: 9 months
Who knew just how much cats would like living in a loft? Jules and Henry turned their cool urban loft into a family home with pets to warm up the space. Henry is a graphic artist and Jules has a passion for interior design, having previously worked at a furniture rental company, so mixing their two strengths resulted in a very fun and functional aesthetic.

Moving from the main living area to the bedroom, you feel like you are entering a boutique hotel in a metropolitan city, what with the high ceilings, the dramatic contrast, Mid-Century influences, and of course the floor-to-ceiling drapery. I love how the bedroom's design is simple and somewhat minimal, but still has a huge impact.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Our style has been described as 'modern menagerie'. It's a mixture of furniture and accessories that that have been accumulated through the years. Since we both have a modern yet utilitarian sensibility, it was easy to meld our collections together. Henry's pieces tend to have a hard edge and geometric line, while Jules' collection draws in more decorative and organic elements. Many of the pieces were found in thrift stores and flea markets. Our styles complement each other and give an overall balance to the aesthetic of our home.
Inspiration: Our home is really inspired by the melding of our two worlds. Since we each have personal collections or objects of sentimental value that have to be displayed, any new piece of furniture has a duty to bridge any gaps. Cabinets that are used to show off childhood collections also have to provide storage for clothing. Pictures and artwork are arranged with similar frames to provide a cohesive flow.
Favorite Element: Our favorite element of our loft is the large open space. This allows us to be creative in creating smaller sections using furniture groupings and placement. We can have parties with over 45 attendees, and they can huddle in their own groups but still feel like they're part of the overall event.
Biggest Challenge: Is also our favorite element. Because the floor plan was a large open concept, there were no walls that aided in defining where to put the living room, the office, the bedroom and or the dining room.
What Friends Say: Friends love our apartment. They are always struck at first at how large of a space we have.
Biggest Embarrassment: Though not really an embarrassment, Henry's guilty pleasure is his collection of Transformers.
Proudest DIY: Our proudest DIY is a tie between our gallery wall and the curtain that separates our bedroom area from our closet area.
Biggest Indulgence: The once a month cleaning service.
Best Advice: The best advice was going with our guts and giving downtown living a try.
Dream Sources: Henry: Blu Dot, Magis; Jules: Any foreign country's outdoor flea market selling vintage pieces

Commercial Flour Sa...
I would TOTALLY give that cat a cheezburger.
Love those windows. This is a very nice space.
I'm biased though because I love seeing pets included in home photos.
LOVE your apt! Would you be so kind to give more info about the room divider panels in the bedroom referred to as the "Ikea hack". Would love to use your process as an inspiration for my teensy NYC studio. Thanks!
nice couple, nice house, nice pets, nice blog.
Your loft is beautiful, your pets are ridiculously adorable, the Transformers cabinet is the bomb - but it was your infectious grins that made me take this house tour.
Super cool! I love the miss matched nightstands the best for some reason. I think it takes courage to do that.
Yummy couple! Lovely animals! Fun apartment!
The most adorable cats!! I love what you've done with the CB2 go-karts! Where did you get those filing cabinets from?
Great home and post! I love those lamps in the bedroom. Does anyone know the style, and/or name them?
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE THE LOFT.
That faceplanter on the coffee table is awesome!!
Love both your lovely smiles and what you have done with your space. That said, being a person who loves my shelter kitty to bits, I do not love kitty feet or kitty butt on food preparation or serving surfaces. A little training might be in order here.
Love it! One of my favorite tours yet.
Awesome place! TOTALLY agree with paminparadise,my cats KNOW better.
This tour reminds me of the quote, "What I love most about my home is who I share it with." These happy faces & completely contented pets! Makes for a very happy, loving, fun home.
Someone asked above about the file cabinets.. The drawer units under the desk look to be from Ikea.. I have the same one. Ikea gets a lot of grief sometimes.. but I've actually had it for many years & it's sound & sturdy!
What adorable pets!
Love the mirror in the entrance. What a dang cute and happy looking couple.
I LOVE THIS HOUSE TOUR. I don't think love is even a strong enough word. Jules and Henry... are my people... from the vintage Transformers, the ceramic owls, the pets, the couches, the colors, the TV cabinets all the things that are in my house....what a great refreshing personal "connection" to an AT House Tour THANK YOU
Those aren't just ceramic owls, they look like ceramic ORIGAMI owls, and that makes them really spectacular. I loved the cats and the little yorkie. They all seem so happy to lounge around.

This apartment is absolutely one of my favorite I've seen on this site. It's fantastic!
Congrats on the space you guys - well deserved! Let's go celebrate!
Burmese?
I have the same grey cat! British Shorthairs are wonderful pets. We adore ours.
Love the cats, but love the wee yorkie even more. Oh and your home is lovely too.x
Lovely home. And oh my gosh, those fat faced cats! Want!
Very cool space, I especially love your living room area! And that cool entryway too :)
WOW! Love your home. So much style and personality.
I don't even like cats and I fell in love with that grey velvet piece of gorgeousness! (S)He reminded me of my friend's old cat who was a real sweetheart. Love your place, I was wondering what a downtown loft looked like when I was at Church & State last week. Congratulations!
Although I do love having cats in my room, I am also quite concerned about their hairs getting into furniture specially on upholstered ones.
Very generous and spacious home..thank you for the grand tour.one of the best!
Now for some fun..guys did you notice the flowers growing out of the cap..last pic where you are holding the cats. It's a keeper too.
You have a lovely home!
Where did you get the wooden tabletop you placed on top of those CB2 go-karts?
Or what kind of wood is it?
Thanks!
DomG , did you notice it appears the cat may like the wood too...as a scratch pad. That is so thoughtful of the home owners...you guys have thought of everything!
LOVE it!!!! Your cats and dog are soooo adorable :)))))
For those who think they have "trained" their cats to stay off surfaces? You know they only "behave" when you can see them, right? ;) Cats are cats.
love your furry babies!
Great place! (super cute critters!)
greatttt place, cool cat! where is that face planter from?
Fantastic place. You took big box furniture pieces to a whole new level of relaxed elegance.
Thank you for your comment. Our cats, Simon and Theadore do deserve nothing but cheezburgers all day long :) Well, except when Simon (the grey kitty) decides to act like a diva and deliberatly swipes things off counters, desks and tables.
Hi BrieBrie, we are so grateful for all the space and all the natural light our windows provide us. There are days where we come home and Simon, Theadore and Odie (the Yorkie) are just laying there, spread eagle, and just basking in the sun.
Hi Lizzey, Thank you, we love our apartment too! When we first toured it, we instantly fell in love. It wasn't until the next day we realize... um, THERE ARE NO CLOSETS! Oh well, we can make do.. and of course we would make do in a stylish way ha ha. At first I thought..ok, track curtains to seperate the storage area from the bedroom. Then I though... how the heck could I do this and spend a lot for custom ceiling track curtains. I'm a huge IKEA fan and i knew they had the ceiling tracks available. 12 foot curtain panels were my biggest challenge.
Materials:
KVARTAL Rail system
KVARTAL Ceiling fixtures
KVARTAL Glide Packs
VIVAN Curtain Panels (I was going for length 98.5" and budget friendly)
RIKTIG Curtain hooks to fasten the panels to the KVARTAL Glide Packs
RIKTIG Gathering tape, white (Very critical to get that gathered/pinched pleat curtain panel look)
Fabric from the good ole garmet district in Los Angeles or any fabric store. Enough to make up for the length of the curtain to the floor.
I can't work a sewing machine to save my life but a good friend of ours is a whiz with that crazy machine. I basially had him sew the RIKTIG Gathering Tape to the top of the curtain panel and a band of the blue fabric to the bottom. Thanks Jose!
Following the instructions on the curtain rods, we afixed the rods to the ceiling and then slid the glide packs into the grooves.
After attaching the RIKTIG hooks to the gathering tape and making sure to evenly space each hook, we attached the hooks to the slide packs that were already attached to the ceiling rod.
5 ceiling rods, 10 curtain panels, a few hours and a few beers later, we had a room divider that provided the soft edges that our bedroom needed and a way to cover up the backside of the BOTNE Wardrobe closet system.
Dear inneedofmakeover,
Thank you, we really appreciate it. This house tour was a lot of fun for us and we are so excited to be on Apartment Therapy.
Thanks Phred! We love our loft and our pets. I wish I kept my Tranformers and Robotech figures from when I was a kid. Fortunately Henry had the foresite to not throw any of his toys away. As far as the grins are concerned, it took a lot more than one or two shots to get the right pics. I'm all about taking pictures with the reverse camera on my iphone but to be the subject of someone elses lense was a different story. I just kept telling Henry to SMIZE (smile with his eyes) and that did the trick.
Hi qlorne,
Yes, it does take courage to purposely miss match night stands. In this case, it was out of necessity. They were purchased at different intervals. We can only splurge so much on furniture at one time. The table with the circular center was scored at Ross Dress for Less and the spindle table with the mirrored top was on clearance at West Elm. Each find evoked a silly giddyness once the item was brought up to the register since both were under $40.
AWWW SHUCKS! Thanks Wassit2u.
awesome pad..where did you get that stormtrooper figure??
Hi pleiovn,
Wildly simple is right. Those two file cabinets are from IKEA. They're the perfect size for all your desk necessities.
Hello Mr. Herrera,
Thank you! We loved sharing it on Apartment Therapy. The lamps were hand-me-downs from Henry's Brother. Prior to that, they belonged to his parents. Those lamps have sure made their rounds!
Thanks Cortlandt! We love love love love our loft too!
Can you believe I got it from ROSS?
Thanks Mattster!
Thanks wildlysimple, I love the quote. It made me smile even bigger than what you see on the housetour!
They are adorable. They sometimes fight and gang up on each other but at the end of the day they know we're all one big family.
I got that mirror years ago at a yard sale. It's one of those pieces that will always have a place in my home.
thanks man! we're gald you have a connection with it! I just wish i kept my robotech and transformers from when i was a kid. Henry made the smart choice to keep everything.
They looooove lounging around, especially in front of the windows on a sunny day.
Aww thanks Terio, we love the checklist.
Hi HHRI,
When Henry saw these in CB2 his face just lit up. Naturally we had to take them home!
Thanks JThurston! We really appreciate it! We were just so happy to share.
Yes rjnotarjay! Thank you again for setting this up! It was superfun.
Hi Jean, Ginger Blue was right.. Btitish Shorthairs. They have so much personality, we just love watching them play.
Hi Ginger Blue, Simon and Theadore are amazing. They have totally opposite personalities. One is super skittish and the other is such a diva.
Cutest cat I have EVER seen.
Great Space! I could totally live there.
Thanks @nconstantwonder! We love living here.
Are you on team Simon (the gray diva) or Theodore (the golden sweetheart)?
Where did you get the face planter? Love your home!
Thanks ibmd3, I actually got it in a clearance section at Ross. I was shocked that no one had purchased it at "regular price".
Thanks for answering my question. I guess its one of those rare finds at Ross but to find it on clearance!
love the loft and the fact that you respond to most, if not all, the comments! and where did you get the mustard-colored little desk lamp? it's adorable!
ZOMG, this loft, those animals (the pets of course), and these adorable boys! I think that's an appropriate use of ZOMG. I 2nd, 3rd, and 56th what's already been said by everyone else. This tour didn't even draw out the usual snark in the AT community! And Jules, oh Jules, responded to every.single.comment. <3
PS: Where are those action figure display cases from?
Hi Eileen! We're happy to answer all the questions. It's all about sharing the wealth of ideas. The display cases are from the BESTSA line at Ikea. Cheers and happy new year!
Hi Irene, Henry got the lamp as a gift. I'm almost positive it's from West Elm.
Happy New Year!
Hi Hrprincesfiona! The cats are smiling too in their own special way. :)
