Q: I recently moved into an old, four story building on Harlem's Sugar Hill. Like the neighborhood, I'm sure my building has tons of history and character. Unfortunately, it smells exactly like an "aged" venue. There's a funk in the air - and not the kind usually associated with Harlem's jazzy vibe.
The block has an intermittent rodent problem because of it's close proximity to two major train stations and a few abandoned buildings. Sometimes I can smell their decaying corpses inside the walls after the exterminator baits. Although my studio is renovated, the rest of the building is old and has a stench that occasionally wafts into my area. I regularly burn incense, candles and bacon, but they only provide temporary relief. Can anyone recommend any long lasting home odor solutions?

Take a look at a good air purifiers with activated carbon filters as well as HEPA filters
http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/chemical-air-purifiers.html
... http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/allergy-multi-purpose-air-purifiers.html The activated carbon can help with odors. Also, keep the air circulating in your apartment as much as possible.
In addition to my previous comment, you can try placing dishes of baking soda around your apartment ... you're going to need a lot of it, but at least it's inexpensive. These may help as well: http://www.lysol.com/cleaning-products/ultimate-freshness/neutra-air-freshmatic any other air fresheners (like you found) will just cover up the odors temporarily. You're going to need something that works continuously.
My mom SWEARS by this stuff - Fresh Wave

I have never tried it, but she keeps telling me to get some for my musty basement smell.
She used it for "dead mouse smell" at her house with great results-
I have the same problem in my Brooklyn apartment. While Fresh Wave does work, I agree with the reviewer about the public bathroom smell. I scrolled down as saw The Original Bad Air Sponge, which I currently use and love. You can pick it up at any BBB for $10. I suggest buying 3, making sure to put one in the closet where you keep your clothes and linens because those horrible smells will get trapped in your clothes.
mmmmm....bacon.
setting out bowls of white vinegar (even though it makes me retch) has helped me before with awful smoke smells. And I've heard great things about the Bad Air Sponge. Is it possible that there's also some moisture inside? Mildew can be a nasty culprit. Damp-rid is a lifesaver for moist air, too. I think that can be found at wal-marts and dollar stores. Best of luck!
I have to use Damp-rid in all of my closet it really helps.
I simmer in an old pot essential oils either orange or eucalyptus it really cleans the air.
Place a couple of recycled plastic containers or jars poke holes in to lids and place in various spots (hidden) around the house fill with cotton balls soaked in a essential oil like eucalyptus, cinnamon, peppermint or orange.
Add baking soda boxes too as mentioned.
I do this in by barn converted studio after being closed up for an extended amount time really helps take the musty odor away. Airing out with windows open helps too.
Bowls of dry unused coffee grounds can work too. They operate on a similar principle to charcoal - they have a structure with many sides that trap odor molecules. And they smell good on their own. Stir them up occasionally. Worked for us when flying squirrels died inside our walls in NC - (but at least that problem was solved permanently by repairing the roof)
save your ducats and move when the lease is up.
Get an ozone generator.
LMAO at "incense, candles and bacon"
There's a room deodorizer/freshener you can buy at home depot or lowes. It comes in a round container, a bit smaller than a coffee can and has ventilation slits on the top. Remove the seal, give it a little shake and sit it somewhere in the room in question. I guarantee that stuff will make your room smell good. Can't remember the name of it but it is effective and long lasting. I use it in my basement. The dehumidifiers are on 24/7 down there but sometimes the air smells wet. (not mildewy, just wet) The freshener stuff works brilliantly and it always smells clean.
Try this one:

I want to second KHinNJ! I've purchased similar "deodorizer in a container" products at my local hardware store and had great success.
The kind I've bought come in a round plastic deli container, usually called something like "Air Sponge," and when you open the lid there's a mysterious thing that looks like a knobbly, speckly bar of gray soap or something. You leave that thing in a corner and it sucks up smells like you wouldn't believe.
Over time, it evaporates and shrinks down, and then you throw away the shriveled husk that remains.
I used them when my boyfriend was living in a vile basement bedroom that smelled strongly of cat pee. Shazam! I also stuck one in my recently-purchased used car (previous owner was a smoker). Kablooey! They are magic!
Atmosklear is the best odor neutralizer I've ever come accross. It's available at some hardware stores or on-line. It doesn't cover up the smell with perfume, it really gets rid of it. Of course, if the smell is coming from outside your studio, it will come back. But this is still worth trying, especially if you don't want your place to smell like flowers, oranges, or whatever.
Can't wait to try the Stink Sponge (or similarly titled product). We have a VERY handsome hound who is equally aromatic. Will report back....
This post is a godsend. We recently moved into a new place, and there is a strong skunk smell in the hallway that encloses the stairs that go down to the garage. I suspect a skunk got under the foundation of the house and sprayed. It's fairly well contained in there, but we store our suitcases in rafter shelves in that hallway and I'm terrified the smell is going to seep into them. I will be buying the Bad Air Sponge asap!
scentsy has does wonders for my small apartment with 3 cats.
ericasullivan: the container product you call the air sponge really works for me. I moved in my apt last april. Previous tenants left an «old dirty sweaty men's feet» smell in the entry hall area and a «old dirty clothes» smell in the bedroom closet. Got both problems solved with the airsponge. Found them at the dollar store.
I have had really good luck with all the Fresh Wave products...and we have 6 cats and 2 dogs.
Won't the smell of bacon attract them?? I'm talking a constant smell.
I know that when you clean/cook fish, you can put out a 1/4 - 1/2 cup of vinegar. That takes away the smell of almost anythign. then when the smell is gone, just dump the vinegar down the drain.
