Let’s say you’ve decided to go a step farther and vacation at an ecolodge, which is a hotel or vacation spot that follows the philosophies of sustainability and environmentalism. • Does your eco-lodge have an actual written environmental policy that you can read yourself? Inquire about their specific contributions to the environment. If they don’t have it written down, you might not be able to take their claims seriously.

  • Ask about their commitment to the local culture and environment. Do they employ locals to work at their lodge? Do they treat them well? How do they contribute to conservation locally?

  • Investigate what percentage of food, linens and supplies are sourced locally. They can claim all their linens are organic, but if they had to ship them from far away, then they’re not being as sustainable as they can be.

  • Ask them about how they treat wastewater, trash and recyclables. Inquire as to the steps they’ve taken to reduce their electricity consumption and ask them how they heat or cool their buildings.

  • Ask them if they have any ideas or advice on how you can learn about the local cultures and participate in conservation efforts while you are vacation.

Have you ever stayed at an ecolodge? If so, share your experience and your advice!
