A new year, a new bedroom. We started the DIY renovation of our new bedroom waaay back at the end of October, when we ripped up the icky carpet in our spare room and fixed up the hardwood floors underneath. Flash forward to January 2008 and we've finally put the finishing touches on our new room. Click below for more photos, sources, and links...
We started out with this plan, which changed quite a bit due to budget restraints and changing priorities. The things that we did keep from our original plan: Chocolate Froth paint by Behr, Reversible Voile Quilt from the Company Store, Pure Beech Jersey Set from Bed Bath & Beyond, and Osaka Boxes from CB2.
Our big splurge was a Queen Leggero Bed from Design Within Reach, which we got for a steep discount at their annual warehouse sale. We'd been dreaming of a new bed for a while, and were finally able to find a high-quality bed within our budget by buying through the warehouse sale.
A few DIY projects can be spotted throughout the bedroom. We painted the hand-me-down dresser (Innocence by Behr for the wood, and white RustOleum for the handles). The curtains were taken from another spot in our home. To extend them to floor length, I cut up an old tablecloth and sewed it onto the ends, stitching a lace band across the mid-section. I also made the pillow shams.
We'd been looking for one spot in our apartment to group our family photos. They ended up over the dresser in the bedroom. Photo frames were from Urban Outfitters last year.
The shelf over the bed gives us reading light and space for the alarm clock, since the bed takes up the whole alcove and we don't have room for bedside tables. The shelf setup is from IKEA: Basisk Wall Lamps, Bjarnum Shelf, and Montera Cord Covers.
It's small but cozy and it's working well for us. Now we just have to redo the living room...and the bathroom...and the home office.

I'm impressed (and motivated and inspired) by the DIY curtains and shams, and thanks too for the link to the Company Store quilt -- I've been looking for something exactly like it, and the whole line is on sale now! I like the white round thing on the table with the book and magazines, it has some kind of round thing in a depression on top of it. What is that?
BTW, if you can sew just a little bit, an easy set of curtains can be made from a twin sheet. Just cut right down the middle longways, hem the raw edges you just made, make a hem at the top for the rod to slip through and a hem at the bottom for the proper length. I used to take a second sheet of a neutral color, like a nice vanilla or white, and make a "liner" the same way, except that when you make the pocket at the top, you put the sheets wrong-side-together and then fold over for the top hem. This can really work well with sheets that have an appropriate pattern and thread count.

Selena - the hamper is the Nito from Crate and Barrel. It was a gift a couple of years ago and we love it.
Kuroneko - the white thing is a lamp and the round part is the bulb that protrudes a little at the top. It was from CB2 a couple years ago, and I don't think they carry it anymore.
Oh, and Devon - we really like the quilt. It's lightweight but very warm.
Lovely!! May I ask what kind of mattress you have for the leggero bed?
We recently purchased a leggero frame at a discount and are using a standard spring mattress, but we can feel a "crowning" effect (a hump down the middle of the bed) from the bowed slats of the frame. We're considering a temprpedic type mattress to alleviate this.
Sarah -- good to know. Except I didn't realize the only color left on sale is the taupe/soft pink, which is kind of meh ... but I'll definitely keep my eye on the Company Store. I always forget about them!
Sofubi, we have a Sultan Foam Mattress from IKEA. It's good for the price, but not what we really wanted. I don't love it. We would eventually like to get the Sonno Mattress. You should not use a standard spring mattress with the bed. The manufacturer recommends a memory foam mattress -- we haven't had a problem with "crowning" or bowing.
Thank you Sarah, much appreciated. I checked the spex on the sultan forestad -- the thickness is 6.25" which seems thin. Is that your chief complaint?
