The Habitat '67 apartment building is an icon of modernism here in Montreal. We always have our eyes peeled for chances to see its interiors. When we saw this unit in the building that recently sold, we were a bit suprised. The interior has been decorated in sort of medieval fashion, an escape from the modernist shell, if you will. See more after the jump.
We agree with an AT reader who said, ...if you live in an architecturally distinctive space... you have an obligation not to desecrate it. What do you think? View more details on the apartment at Sotheby's Realty.

This is right up there with the folks who take Eichlers and trowel on the stucco and install archways and mexican tile roofs...
Oh, wow, that's... unexpected.
I like it...it's an interesting contrast and I think it works.
I didn't realize that Montreal has been annexed by Long Island.
I think you may have an obligation not to destroy the space - paint over great wooden molding, or the kind of thing bepsf mentioned - but you can decorate it however the hell you want. Contrast and Unexpectedness can be good. And your first obligation is always to yourself: You have to live in a place you like.
This sort of style contrast is very common in Quebec.
Think Celine Dion...
I dated a fellow who lived in a Mies tower on Lake Shore Drive. It had been '70's-fied' by the previous owner with mirrored walls, shag carpeting, and some of the most heinous wallcovering and draperies I had ever seen. And brown toilets! Oy god. When it was all stripped by to the original shell, the interior gutted and rebuilt to the original specs...it was decidedly more magazine worthy, but it had lost the funky charm and livability that it previously had.
This is the second such "renovation" I've seen in Habitat 67. But it could be worse.
There was a time in the 1980s when MCM was considered incredibly vulgar. The English Country Style craze was all about having inherited antiques (or looking like you did). New store-bought furniture was considered crass, and Modernist glass houses were torn down to build faux-Tudor McMansions. At least Habitat 67 is still there.

Hahahahaha!!! Good one!
