We have a toaster in the cabinet above the refrigerator, a griddle in the built-in oven drawer and a mixer below the sink. Our appliances are strewn about the kitchen in an effort to hide the things we don't use every day. Wouldn't it be great to have a dedicated spot that's low-impact to hide them?
We spotted this image on KitchenBathIdeas.com of an 'appliance garage' hidden behind a faux backsplash panel that opens up (and out of the way) to reveal the storage unit.
It's brilliant! These kitchen gadgets are tucked away when you don't need them, but as soon as you open the door, they're sitting right on top of the counter where you'd use them. No more straining to lift the heavy mixer from floor-level cabinets. A bonus idea is to build your compartment where they'll be an outlet or two at the back.
We can see two different applications of this idea:
- If you're building a kitchen from tghe tile up, or if you're doing a complete renovation on your existing kitchen, ask your contractors to build-in a hidden appliance garage hidden by a faux backsplash.
- If you're not ready to do any demo, you could retro-fit this in to an existing kitchen. If you've got a wide enough counter, you could rig a compartment to sit on top with an identical or complementary backsplash material or pattern to cover it—or just cover your whole kitchen! It's a great idea for renters or anyone who hates their existing backsplash.
