What magazine was it that I just saw another house painted black... could it have been Domino? Anyone? I had never seen that before and I kind of love it! I don't know what it is but I just think it looks really sleek.

I've noticed a victorian house in my Denver neighborhood that is painted black, but more of a glossy black. I've always admired it but think it would be a problem keeping it cool in our intense summer sun. That probably isn't as much a concern in London.

I really like Belgian houses with white painted brick... don't know if I would paint a house black (that is quite a commitment!), but I did paint our son's nursery black (well, 2 walls of it)...

I love it. Especially the pink door.

It would certainly be easy to keep clean. I imagine the grime in London would be quite evident on those tired flesh coloured walls of the adjoining dwelling. As an exterior colour black is generally discouraged in Australia for the environmental performance of the building; however there are less solid shades such as charcoal and dirty greys which are very popular. Personally, I think this colour is too heavy. A better result would be acheived with a matte charcoal and a red door.

Painting is ruination to the brick, and usually undertaken to disguise flaws. That said, I like this - love the colour.

Deep charcoal yes, black no. Too emo and goth for my taste.

anyhow, i love it. i love the contrasts of the pink and the white with the black. completely darling, if not COMPLETELY energy inefficient. But i'm sure there's ways around that issue.

How timely -- I just read a post at BoingBoing about Anton LaVey's "Black House" (its nickname as well as its literal description) being turned into crappy, boring condos.

Actually, my house was black (with gray trim) when we bought it, and we had it painted yellow with white trim. I have to say, black looks a lot better on that house than it did on ours.

Absolutely, but only in some very limited circumstances.

I would've preferred the door to be a different sort of vibrant color, like French racing blue, or Ferrari red.

Hot Pink with B&W Zowee...lu'it!!!

I completely love it. And I would do it in a heartbeat. It's beautiful and I find that the white trim and candy pink door (the pink is perfect) makes it cheerful. I've seen black barns in New England. The color pops in snow and in the summer when it's green. So pretty.

This looks good, in contast to a house here in Austin (Texas) that someone painted black last winter. I'm guessing they're from somewhere with less sun and cooler temps. All summer I was dying to go by and ask them how it was working out.

There's a house on my block painted black, including the trim. It doesn't look nice... but this kind of does. I think charcoal gray with cream/white trim is a very pretty and classic paint scheme.

it looks great on this particular house, especially with the trim and door and the contrast of the houses next to it.

My cousin's nextdoor neighbors house was a small shingle cottage, perhaps a re-purposed carriage or gate house? It was black back then, now it has been painted beige and has lost all its appeal for me. I used to think it was so charming its shingle walls and hedges, now it just seems shabby-shack...

I like it. I think the pink door is very chic. There's a black house in my neighborhood with white trim. I LOVE that house. I am dying to paint their door red though (it's currently white). There was a black house on the cover of Dwell magazine a few issues ago. I grew up in a white and black ranch in Ft. Lauderdale.

I love it, it looks very classy and elegant to me. A lot of homes in Amsterdam are painted black with white trim, I love the look. Maybe it wouldn't work in suburbia, USA though.

i was going to comment that i live in new england and i've seen several houses painted black. but then i saw the comment about a black house being goth and i realized the houses i was thinking of were in salem, mass, the home of the salem witch trials and all things goth! anyway, aesthetically, i do like it.

Its great, but ONLY as set off by the other houses; imagine if whole blocks were painted black they way whole blocks are brick or brownstone or white shingle?

In this setting the house looks great. But I wouldn't have painted the door pink. I agree with hrhprincess, something should be done with the garden wall.

Donna Freeman would NOT approve. Personally I think it's interesting, but I can't help looking at the future and imagining having to reverse this for the selling process. Plus we're seeing this from a distance and I don't think brick looks all that good up close when it's painted.

That being said, they seem to have done a lovely job of putting on the paint, it looks very neat and trim. Wouldn't it be nice if they could have painted the brick wall white as well? And yes, they need to LOSE the crappy window treatments and get something better. I might not have gone with pink for the door. Black would be interesting (camouflage!) and white would be classy.

when i was in Norway, Sweden, and Finland this past fall, I'd say about 25% of the houses I saw were black. Another 25% were red or orange, the other 50% were white. Also, the siding in most case ran vertical instead of horizontal.
