One of the things that caught our attention when we were last looking for a place to live, was this brightly painted laundry nook. We personally wouldn't have been brave enough to have whipped out a can of watermelon tinted paint, but we couldn't be happier with the results...
As it turns out our space was designed by a pair of Apartment Therapy readers and we couldn't be happier with their color choices throughout the home. Even though we're only renting, it's been a great place to live and a sincere pleasure to do laundry each and every time.
Because the area already stood out, we went ahead and adorned it with artwork to make the space feel like a finished part of the room and our "out there for all to see" laundry space fits 100% with the rest of our decor.
Would you have been bold enough to paint this laundry alcove with such a bright color (it's slightly more pink in person)? Or would you have just painted it the same color as the rest of the walls around it?

Nomade Express Slee...
Great idea. I'll have to do that. What's with the wrestler's hat? lol
I like that! Thx for the idea Sarah!
Nice, we have a similar little laundry nook in our basement that is screaming for some paint. I like the laundry detergent stashed in that metal bucket/bin as well.
It took me a couple reads to figure this story out (I think): you ended up renting the above apartment with the laundry nook, and your landlords, by chance, are AT readers?
why is everyone hatin on sarah. this is a good post, and is perfectly clear. if you can't understand whats going on, thats your problem.
and, in other news, i painted my own laundry nook a vibrant aqua and loved it! it makes doing laundry just a little less tedious.
I like the idea of something bright in the laundry area. Aqua sounds good!
Great color, and great idea! I'll want a laundry space like that when I buy a house in the future... Thanks for the post:)
I do think this space looks pretty great. Wonderful color choice great way to make the area a little more fun (and laundry definitely needs more fun)
But I had to read the post twice to understand the situation also.
I like this laundry nook. Great color and the poster is a nice touch. I like the Holstein bulldog too.
Ugh. I would prefer a curtain or set of bifold doors. Who wants their washer and dryer on display like that?
I like the colors and poster, but would prefer the appliances to be hidden behind a door or curtain as well. It's nice to see the space decorated and painted even if covered most of the time.
I probably would've done something with the unfinished ceiling over top of the washer and dryer. That said, bold colours in the laundry area are great! My laundry room was gray when I bought my house, so I painted it turquoise, and I love it.
My laundry room is lime green. I love it.
I have a summer townhouse and in the upstairs hallway is a laundry nook like this one, but with slatted bifold doors. The doors are huge and not attractive, and the hallway is narrow and dark. I actually think removing the doors and painting the laundry space might be an improvement.
I just love the dog in this picture. I'm a huge fan of the space and color in this shot... I just fell in love with the little guy though:)
The photo in this post is exactly what I want in my apartment. We're looking for front-loaders on craigslist right now and the puppydog in the foreground is my favorite breed!
As for the bold color, I think it's fantastic. A little unexpected pop is fun. I might have added long curtains so that I could close off this area when not in use, depending on where it is in the house.
Love, love, love the look. And really, why not go bold in a place where the work may be dreary. My only complaint is a safety one: that flexible dryer ventilation duct is a fire hazard, as it engenders the build-up of lint and static. (This stuff seems to be the rage all over Chicago.) Best to use firm ductwork.
1. as the former owners, we're glad you love it! :) in hindsight, some of our color choices were pretty brave, but we never thought twice about them.
2. i'm so happy to see the birds are still around!
3. your dog is positively adorable! very nice photo styling!
:)
I would have painted the washer and dryer.
