(Hello again to Jessica who is trying out for the SF team. Her first post is here.)
Artist Tom Woodbridge does two-minute portraits of people on the backs of coasters at his local brewpub. He gave me a handful out of the more than one hundred that he does on any given night, and I immediately fell in love with them. I started thinking about how this would be a great idea for my next get-together. Have each guest draw an illustration on the back of an ordinary coaster, and soon, you have yourself a little collection of artwork from your favorite people.
When I had more space, I tiled 5-10 of them on the wall in a great mosaic style. Now, in a small space, I still wanted them viewable, but have very limited wall space. I put them in one half of a Jonathan Adler lacquered box (my stack of Polaroid photos in the other half), and voila! Friends can leaf through them, and I still get to see my favorite condensation catchers cum works of art.

Another clever and practical idea from Jessica!
not much of a fan of themed coasters....but i love these, and they look sharp in the orange box.
the post, however, really should say more about the artist, and how to contact him.
also how are you preserving them? my experience with pub coasters- rather vast i might add- doesn't include durability as a descriptor.
Brilliant!
Thanks so VERY much for using the first person!
What a fun party idea!
Great idea as long as none of your friends spill their drinks on the coaster. Wouldn't want a droopy cheek...unless that was the illustrator's intention. Maybe you could just put out place mats like they have at Denny's, and then put a bunch of crayons on the table.
these are rad. jessica can we know which brewpub?!
This is a fun idea and, I must say, the best writing from the try-outs.
I've always wished I had a Zett'l Z lamp so that I could have friends and partyguests do the same thing :)
Great idea for a party, I'd love to find coasters that were actually blank so they'd be solely for this purpose!

i agree - this posts reads so much better in first person...the 'we' kind of reminds me of the 'royal' we.
cool coasters!
Love this post, love Jessica.
I love this.
