Given our druthers we prefer a wood floor over carpet, linoleum or painted floors. But whether you go dark or light, wood flooring tends to come in a range of wood, i.e. brown tones, and the excitement comes from what goes on top of it, from rug to furniture. Or so we thought, until we saw these floors...
Renovated by Swedish architects Tham & Videgard Hansson, these floors in the Humlegarden Apartment, challenge that idea with a playful puzzle of undulating colour. The herringbone pattern of the floor highlights the appeal; the apartment is furnished with stark white furniture to keep the emphasis on the witty floors. We're tempted to let our inner paintbox loose on our own floors. For more information click here.

I would find it really hard to decorate adjoining rooms cohesively with all the multi floor color/design. It really IS eye catching and different....but would be a difficult task for most people.
Horrific.
Tacky.
Holy moly.
wow!!! am i the only one that absolutely LOVES THIS? so cool!
Not loving the way it's done, climbing up the walls, nor the colors chosen, nor the herringbone pattern which is rather dizzying. That being said, I like the idea of mixing colors of stain in non-traditional colors and allowing the planks of wood to guide the color breaks.
I'm imagining it with a lot of white, blending to pastels on a traditionally laid floor off, say, a nursery.
The dynamic duo at Design Crisis produce thought-provoking features every day. Definitely check them out!
I love how it travels up the walls up to the chair rail. Very different look.
Can we have some self-censorship in the comments here? Please? It's gotten soooooooooooooo boring reading the comments with all of your childish retorts of disgust.
I remember the good ole days of actual intelligent discussion, even when disapproving of the feature.
Looks pretty cool. I think if I had a room like this I would opt for all white furniture so that it wouldn't clash with the colors on the floor.

Love it. Love it, love it, love it!
This is fantastic.
I love the colors chosen (I'm obsessed with bright, rich pink).
It does make me wonder what it would like without going up the chair rail. And I think black as the wall color would really make the floors pop and allow you to do more. That pink?white? is unsettling and distracts the eye.
Oh, and this would be sooo amazing for a dance club and lounge bar. If the wood went up the walls in that amazing design. Or black walls. Ahhh, I love it.
Right now, the colors and patterns in the rooms give me the feeling that I'm stuck in an arcade game. I'm thinking something along the lines of Galaga or Space Invaders.
I'd like to see what the rooms might look like with some furniture and decor. I think it would help soften the impact of the floor/wall design.
Dizzying, unnatural, and uncomfortable, as well as severely limiting in terms of furniture, art and other decorative elements. I think it's the high-contrast colors and the fact that the design is climbing up the walls. It seems too high-energy for a home. Maybe it would be better for a public space like a hotel lobby or a gallery? (I can see the floors being an interesting background for sculpture). Of course, there are probably some who like very vivid, 'noisy' homes.
This makes my eyes bleed. It's horrific.
Yikes! I guess relaxation is a no-no in the designers' minds?
I think if you look at the floors taking on the role of pattern and color on the floor instead of a rug then you can appreciate it much more. i think it's a very dynamic design and i like how there is a lot of movement in the pattern. it's like the floor draws you from room to room.
Looking at this on a daily basis will either drive me crazy.
I would frantically search for the eraser tool.
I like the concept of a wood floor in ONE strong colour, and indeed am trying to convince my fiance of the merit of something out of the range of natural wood, that still shows the grain.
...He would use these pics as an argument against, though.
I think one colourway without going up the walls would be a still-vibrant, much easier sell.
