Our first San Francisco apartment boasted a massive metal security gate. We never loved it, but found it a comfort when our apartment front-door lock was out of commission for way too long. We just wished the gate didn't have to be soooo ugly and mean looking.

Those gates have such creative potential, don't you think? And goodness knows, we love us some nifty design work in unexpected places...

That's beautiful!
Reminds me of the Lawrence Welk Show!
Can't you stick your hand through one of the circles and turn the knob on the other side? Maybe it's some other mechanism...
So where can I buy one?
Love to put it on my Balcony anyone can climb into it the way it is now. This is really great as it let's the light and breeze in while keeping the bad out.
Way better than bars!!!
The security gates are quite nice... Too bad the area behind it is so unattractive... There is no reason to secure it.
Ha! I think I know exactly where these are. Would they be in Oakland near 8th Avenue? If so, they were constructed by the artist, Mario Carillo, who also worked for the Oakland Museum. He created the tile mosaics that are part of the same live/work complex too.
I love the old iron security gates around SF. Some of them are quite spectacular.
Wow! These are so cool!
Lol. Anyone from Russia or other ex-USSR countries here? We've been using these for YEARS and they were not associated with anything chic.
Gorgeous! Looks a lot like this:

speaking of cool security gates, here's one by the korean graphic designer Ahn Sang-Soo: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2007/2327808698_574d6e49ac_o.png
ooh, that is lovely!
Very nice! I love it! Very mod!
We had a security gate on our loft in Belltown, but it was all too easy for someone to put their hands through the bars and unlock it themselves...
we made a security fence and gate exactly like that a few years back for a major utility company's headquarters here in san diego.
as for concerns about reaching though, we added a large panel of perforated metal with large circular holes to follow the theme welded on the back side. since it was a commercial project we had to have panic bars on the door. for a residential unit you could have a keyed both sides lock. (as long as there is an exit that will not trap you in case of a fire.
in anyone wants a gate like this visit our website www.sandiegoweldingservices.com
thanks
