So you know about the Huggies Jean Diapers (which some of you thought were hilarious and others thought were dumb) and we told you about Pampers' plans to get into the designer diapers business with Cynthia Rowley. Well, we spotted them in person over the weekend at Target.
The different patterns designed by Ms. Rowley are categorized by boy and girl. We're not totally sure we understand the purpose of designed diapers but they are a refreshing change from the licensed characters we usually see on Huggies and Pampers.
Has anyone tried these Cynthia Rowley-designed diapers yet?

Here's the thing--they're not even that cute!
The New York Times magazine had an article about these types of diapers on Sunday:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/01/magazine/01fob-consumed-t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine
i saw these at my local target (before i joined the boycott for their anti gay rights campaign funding). i guess it's one way ms rowley can be sure her designs are timeless...in landfills.
Trying again:
NYTimes magazine article
I agree that they aren't very cute. I just want white diapers, darn it.
Heaven forbid that something my child fills with poo isn't cute or "designer."
patterned toilet paper; i don't get it.
I think this is an attempt to compete with cloth diapers, which really are much cuter (on so many levels...)
I agree with GDW. Cloth is much cuter!
Ugh... this is the wrong crowd. To add to all the oil in the gulf... now more diapers with non-biodrgradable ink in the landfill. Like those bumper stickers say "evolve"
Target = anti-gay? *sigh* Didn't know that and now I need to look it up and have the moral crisis of conscience.
Saw the diapers too- bleh designs. Better than the Disney stuff but not nearly as cute as cloth.
This is a ridiculous waste of money, and they do not even stand out to me as being "cute". Why not cloth diaper if you are looking for your child to have a designer bum?
I agree - cloth are much cuter!
I was excited to try them too, but when I saw them I didn't think they were that great. And way too much $. We're always looking for ways to cut down on diapers, this isn't it!
I was all prepared to mention cloth as well. I'm certain this is an attempt to compete with the cuteness of cloth. And this loses on every level.
Folks, this is not a cloth vs. disposable debate. This is a huggies is cutting into what used to be solely our market debate. Pampers supplies hospitals. Almost all hospitals. Studies have found that parents who take home remnants of a pack of diapers from their hospital post-birth, tend to go out and keep buying pampers. Huggies has been putting out some stellar coupons, keeping their pricing under pampers, even if it's slightly so, and actually ran a good campaign with that whole jean diapers thing. I'm tired of people touting cloth diapers on a disposable thread. We know the options- you don't have to beat us over the head with it. I cloth- I am not a religious soldier for cloth. Try not to be, ok?
More importantly? The Rowley diapers are made with dri-max, which continues simultaneously give a lot of kids rash problems, and get bad press. Good luck, Pampers. You're going to need all the help you can get.
I thought they were way too expensive to buy.
Just what our recession economy needs: more expensive diapers.
"I am not a religious soldier for cloth" - haha, love this, @lunafaerie5! I have a "friend" who is one of these (90% of her Facebook statuses are about her love of cloth diapers).
I use disposable diapers but there is no way I would buy these, unless they were on major clearance. I'm not brand loyal to diapers and I usually buy what is on sale or is the cheapest since my kids haven't had a problem with any brand.
I'm shocked that no one has mentioned the Pampers = terrible diaper rash scandal! (Or perhaps a few did, but they were pulled due to some advertising agreement with Ohdeedoh? Who knows how that goes.)
Either way, my daughter was one of the many children injured by Pampers new "Dry Max" diaper - and she was injured long before this ever hit the news and became mass hysteria. In fact, it was when they were still hiding the new diapers in the old boxes, hence how we ended up with some.
I don't care how cute they make them - I'm not paying someone to injure my kid. And the Huggies jeans diapers were ugly.
The only diapers we'll buy are from Target and, while I'm disgusted by the fact that they've made politic contributions to a group that supports someone who happens to be anti-gay, I've still got to put my baby's bum first and keep buying their diapers (though I've stopped buying everything else from them, which was a LOT...ask my husband).
Want a designer diaper? Embroider a cloth diaper cover.
I saw those yesterday! They aren't very cute, and I so wouldn't pay the hefty price for them.
I still don't really understand why. I like just plain white. I have cute clothes- so I don't need diaper designs.
I'm with DressageRider. I just want a white diaper for the love of God.
I don't know anybody whose kiddo is running around all the time with no pants...maybe I'm missing something? The only time the cuteness of a diaper has crossed my mind was at baby-portrait time, when I wanted plain white. I have to say, the Target Up&Up dots are cuter than these, anyway.
About the cloth vs. disposable debate: please don't shoot me---I have a REALLY good reason for not doing cloth---I don't have a washing machine!
Okay, first of all those are not cute enough to justify spending more money on them. Secondly if you want your kids' bum to look cute there are lots and lots of little bloomers you can slide right over a disposable diaper. Third, in this economy I don't think there are a lot of people who are willing to shell out more money for "cute" diapers, they're poop receptacles. I think Pampers is WAY off the mark here. Instead of this, they should be spending money trying to make their product more biodegradable and eco friendly.
Blech... I don't see the need for patterned nappies AT ALL. My kids wear cloth at home, disposable when we're out (because, yes, I am lazy and don't want to deal with it when out/away. Strike me down). Whenever they're in nappies, they're always covered with pants, leggings, rompers or bloomers? I don't even see the need for cutely patterned cloth ones.
Yeah, I'd rather see a new disposable that's biodegradable. Why is this taking so long to develop?
At least the 7th Generation are chlorine free, fragrance free, latex free, and hypoallergenic. As someone who primarily uses cloth, but keeps disposables in the car, I'm pretty boggled by why so many parents WANT scented or dyed diapers. Uh, that crap is bad for your baby's skin. And the fragrance of most disposables is so unappealing to those of us who use fragrance free disposables or cloth... I have no idea why more parents don't notice it. The aroma my son emits when he's in a 7th Gen or cloth diaper is so much less strong than when he's in a scented diaper.
I bet that's next: your baby's disposable diaper, featuring Paris Hilton perfume!
These are ugly and, considering how many diapers we go through with my little girl, would be a huge waste of money (are there really as few in the box as it appears from the pic??)
I use cloth and while I have a few cute prints, most of them are solid colors or white. I don't get these "designer" disposables at all...makes no sense.
I keep a pack of Huggies naturals handy for days that I just don't get to do laundry soon enough...Pampers are horrible. Worse diaper rash (no, scratch that...worst chemical burn) ever!
I saw these the other day in Target. They aren't even that cute and the price is ridiculous. No thanks!
@honeyhaze; bio-degradable disposable: g diapers. www.gdiapers.com
we used these quite successfully w/ our kidlet.
Aside from the just plain ludicrous idea of caring so much about the appearance of something no one sees and that you throw away, these aren't even that original or cute. Since I do disposables and I don't mind a little novelty here and there I might go for it if they weren't so insanely expensive!
I find it funny that so many cloth diaper lovers even bothered to read this article much less comment on it. I have 4 kids and 3 of them have only been able to use pampers. We tried all sorts of other diapers and always ended up with rashes. My son tends to spend his days at home in just a diaper as the current temps are in the 90's. I wouldn't mind a cute diaper but I won't be wasting an extra $6 on it. Sesame Street will do just fine, thank you.
I love my gDiapers. I use gCloth at home and the flushable inserts while out. Plus they're far cuter than any of the diapers featured here.
I felt like saying "DUH" when I saw these. When my oldest was little I used to by United Colors of Benetton diapers on eBay because they were so pretty. I never could figure out why diaper companies just didn't do this before. They don't have to cost a fortune, it should almost be standard in this day and age.
