We ran across this really cool idea on a building material reuse website where a customer purchased a used mantelpiece and DIY'd their own headboard. In our search for other mantelpieces masquerading as headboards, we found one other example (with instructions to boot).
We fell in love with this bedroom setup. The DIY mantelpiece headboard draws you in and the smokey gray paint makes the headboard pop. The great thing about having a mantelpiece as a headboard is the fact that you instantly have a place to prop your artwork and pictures.
She painted the mantel white and instead of leaving an opening (like our previous example) she added a foam piece of plywood covered in floral fabric. You can follow Kimberly's DIY instructions here.

The flea market wasn't stripped. How about this instead: "found her headboard, already stripped, for $40 at a flea market"?
I think this is a great idea, but I would have liked the first one better if it hadn't been left open. I think the inner portion would look better painted the same color as the mantel or covered in fabric like the second one.

It looks great! I like the first one and the way it is open.
I also wouldn't want to sleep with my head in a pile of lumber or a grove of trees----other things that these headboards USED to be.
I love it! Both are cute, but I especially like the fabric one, it adds a little something. I also like that thing in the corner- it looks like an old window or something that she attached fabric to. That would be another great DIY.
I have used this in my spare bedroom, got the mantle at a yard sale, stripped it down and repainted it. My beds a bit higher so with some nice big pillows, it looks great.
This is a great idea. I would definitely not place objects on the headboard above my head though!! Last thing you want to wake up to is an earthquake, let alone some glass vase landing on your head.
I am not a follower of feng shui, but my gut instinct was that it wouldn't feel restful to sleep with a mantle above my head.
I guess these are not for couples with lots of activities...watch out for falling objects!
I think this is a great idea! And I like how you can see the wall color in the opening of the first picture.
For those worried about earthquakes, you know there are ways to steady objects, right? Especially if they're just a few paintings like the first pic. Sticky-tack does wonders, but you can use velcro or even screws.
