We've posted many times about terrariums and often have featured succulents, but things like this bathmat and this post on indoor plantscapeshave people asking us where the heck to find moss and the supplies needed for a moss terrarium. Well search no more:

Why does that kit look like it produces some kind of food??
I read the comment about moss harvesting in the bathmat post and now I am worried about finding sustainable moss.
you can get tons of sustainably harvested moss off of my driveway if you'd like. Probably not a great idea to grab it out in the wild, but it grows plenty of places where it's not particularly desirable. I had actually been thinking of doing something like this with a funky fish bowl that I can no longer keep fish in (hungry cat) and the abundance of moss throughout my yard.
Here's my Make Your Own Terrerium Kit:
1 glass globe - $2 from Wal-Mart
Assorted rocks and stones - free from outside
Dirt - free from outside
Moss - free from outside
I make my own but we have fields of moss outside our front door. Amazingly, people want to buy them off me. It never ceases to amaze me what people will buy when they could do it themselves.
I think those little moss terrariums are adorable and where i live we don't get any "wild" moss. i was considering getting one of these as it seems like a nice relaxing activity to make one, but i had never thought about the sustainability aspect of moss harvesting, so i think i'll do a little research before buying.
Hello , I am reading this and have a question ..... Or three . This is where I am at , I have a fish tank project (75 gallon ) I would like to have a smaller tank with plants in and waterfall with mosses and what not on the hood of the bottom tank . Yes it sounds great and all , yet I have no idea how to grow or maintain said mosses . I would like to go all naturalist and make a lil river ecosystem type setup . Thats the goal !
Are we ready ? Now come the questions , besides the basics of growing moss successfully . I read the words sustainablely harvested moss from your lawn . My property has tons of mosses all over . Some look like lil pine trees , some like ferns , some of it looks like a plush green carpet , most is green , some is blue and some glows in the dark . I would be dissapointed if I tried to bring some in and killed it in my yard and then there's is none .
Any pointers , any advice ? How can I make the stuff outside spread ? What makes moss grow well ?
