I made a similar setup in my kitchen sink using two glasses, only I used a dish instead of a shelf. I use this shelf to display favorite cutlery...

That's kind of a big footprint for a shelf. If the intention is to get things elevated off the table/counter surface, so there's more room, then this would defeat that purpose.
It doesn't seem to be saving a lot of space.
I have those same acrylic tumblers (yup it's acrylic). Love that Target.
