When you are lacking in closet space, sometimes the only option available is a free standing clothes rack. Providing that a commitment is made to keeping clothes hung in an orderly fashion, a free standing rack can look quite nice. My favorite version is designed by Leif Jørgensen and made by the Danish brand Hay. It is distinctive for its simple shape and bold color (it is available in black, white and yellow).
While this piece might not be accessible due to price or lack of availability, a somewhat satisfying alternative can be had through design giant IKEA.
The Hay Loop Stand is available in three colors and two sizes.
The Ikea Turbo Clothes Rack is not as stylized or distinctive as Hay's version, but the shape is simple and color is right.

In terms of style, it seems the "Fol-D-Rak™" from the Container Store is much closer to the Hay rack... Even better, that is made in the USA at a very good price :)
