Who says city living precludes kitchen gardening? This couple adapted their sizable (about 40 square feet) apartment balcony to grow herbs and tomatoes, and took pictures to prove it.

We get bogged down on creating a total experience in every corner of our home, including the outside areas. But we love how stripped down and functional this project is, and how they've taken advantage of the light they get from high up.

I have the same shelf for my plants on my balcony. $9.99 at Ikea. It's perfect for my herbs. Just make sure to oil it so it can hold up outside!
I recognise the 'Spot' building in their view, must be taken from the Metropolitan Towers on Seymore St?
Jealous and inspired.
This is our apartment. Glad you like our setup - we're starting anew this year once the balcony warms up above 10C at night.
Last summer, we found that rosemary and oregano fared best, so we'll continue growing hardy herbs this season. The basil provided lots of leaves but is susceptible to cold. We'll pot all the herbs individually this time to prevent voracious herbs (like the oregano) from crowding out the others.
Metropolis - yes, we do live at Metropolitan Towers...just don't give away our suite number! =)
