Look! IKEA Gorm For Storage And Your Sink

In our internet travels today we came across a great hack for the IKEA Gorm shelving unit. Normally this isn't something we'd think about for use as a countertop, let alone a entire shelving unit and sink surround, but it worked out brilliantly for Thye Foo in Malaysia. This would be a great way to inexpensively makeover a bathroom or a kitchen needing storage! Click through to see the piece in progress.

We love a great idea from our friends at IKEA Hacker and this find is no different.

This is what Thye started with, fixtures and a wall.

Next the building starts and the hacking begins.

Useful but I find it looks kind of like a student's rental in a boarding house.

I like it. Might not be anyone's dream bathroom, but it's a good-looking, inventive short-term solution. Most bathroom vanities are pretty boring, so if it's a choice between a low-end Home Depot vanity and this one, I'll take this one.

And, it's a good idea that can be used with some more interesting modular shelving units, too.

Woah. I have some of these shelves. They are way too flimsy for a sink.

Where have all the windows gone?

If you cross brace the shelving, as Ikea suggests in the instructions, and if you anchor the shelving properly to the wall, they are certainly strong enough to hold a sink. I used GORM to replace my pantry shelving when demolition-boy destroyed it while taking out the moldy flooring (another long story - don't ask), and I made a metalcrafting workbench out of IVAR shelving parts, and both are very sturdy, if a bit utilitarian. But heck, affordable is a good thing!

yes, Gorm, like its predecessor, is very sturdy when set up right, and can hold much more than just a sink and bathroom stuff.
i like it - it is simple and airy.

regarding the the window...one of the commentors on IKEA hacker pointed out that it looks like a blind pulled down...just that it also goes over the molding. If you look at the ledge, you can see the its hem.

I love how it leaves the window nice and open. It has character and is so much cheaper than a lot of other options. The fact that the plumbing isn't too large helps a great deal. For me however, clutter would be insane. Maybe some drawer stye baskets.

I am from Malaysia and it is a very humid and warm country. I think the owner did a good job with the shelves but he may want to put the caps on for the legs of the shelves before it becomes moldy or start to rot as he may once in a while wash the bathroom floor and it will take time to dry with the high humidity. That is what I did with my Gorm in my bathroom.
