Look! IKEA Metal Hanging Shelf-Turned-Drying Rack

At a friend's new apartment last weekend, we noticed some great space-saving solutions in her not-so-huge kitchen. Rather than take up precious counter space with a dish drying rack, she uses a hanging IKEA shelf (sorry, we don't see this one online) directly over the sink for drying dishes.

This is an idea we might just have to steal for our own. Any other "IKEA Hacker-esque" bright ideas out there?? Tell us!

That's actually what that shelf was designed for. It is a dish rack that folds up when not in use. We had it in our old house and bought it in 1999. They don't sell that exact wall system anymore.

thanks for the post, heather. i purchased this rack about a month or so ago. while i was there, i noticed they had a ton of options in this wall system. i'm pretty sure they had the whole line represented. it's cheap, easy to clean and sturdy. i love it.

I have one that's very similar to this, but the top hanging bar is different. It came with my place and I love it as a drying rack in addition to my dishwasher. So, I don't use it as a full service drainer for all my dishes, which would probably be too much. One problem is that with mine, if it's out and something's drying on it and I use the faucet turn on underneath, which pulls up to turn on the water, it hits the rack. There's no other way to position this on the wall without this happening. This has been wearing out the finish on the faucet. In the picture above, it looks like it might be difficult to get at the faucets when the drying rack is down. So, faucet interference can be one of the downsides to this.

We purchased this drying rack over the summer due to a mouse situation on our counters. I also purchased some additional products in the stainless steel GRUNDTAL series for hanging pots and accessories. I'm really happy with the look, as we were able to place ours about a foot above the counter(no interference with the facet) and it added some dimension to our kitchen.

avimom, SandraKJ is right. it is the GRUNDTAL system. it's been around since pre-1999. the dish rack actually came out in 2000. i have some insider info.....
