Signs inside NY apartment buildings grow like tribbles, covering your visual path from front door to elevator to apartment, and eventually we stop noticing. NOT AT 23 BEDFORD STREET.
In our own building, we have been a daily audience for the past few years to an escalating feud between one of our landlords (3rd floor) and one of our tenants (4th floor). Mind you, it is all bark and not much bite. No one is ever moving out.
Last Friday, Dan of DanConnorTown visited and ran around taking beautiful photographs of all the signs. The story is a long one, so we'll just let you read the signs...and what Dan wrote on his blog:
Oh, there's this funny apartment in here today. Well. it's not the apartment. it's the running dialogue the landlord has with the tenants. A real italian family feud. I mean, these guys are naming names. It was a very interesting little spot over in the west village. So, i hope you'll enjoy it. I kind of like the pictures i'm putting up tonight for The Sabbath. They really sort of tell it like it is. You know, I know a dude who likes to say "It is what it is..." And that's i guess what i'm saying.

LOL! How zany!
Is there anything more adorable than a sign posted by a landlord? I mean, the grammar, the spelling, the not-necessarily-legally grounded bases for the complaints, etc., along with the attempt an authoritarian tone that makes it SOUND threatening. Even if you're in a co-op, there are sometimes leftover tenants that have strange/bad relationships with the management or the board so that there is rarely a dull moment.
That is too much! It puts my "conflict" with my downstairs neighbor to shame...and into perspective!
How I miss that part of NYC life! Sometime between when I signed the lease on my apartment in Park Slope and when I moved in, someone scrawled "I love you, P, and I'll be back" in big black marker on my mailbox. I never got the backstory, but I always wondered what would happen when they came back and found P gone. My landlord cleaned it off right after I moved out.

I actually used to live in this building and it was every bit as bad as it is made out to be.
Reminds me of a San Francisco apartment I lived in where the manager would put up Christmas decorations in the lobby, along with a note saying, "Do not steal Christmas decorations." Also there were a few paintings in the lobby that we screwed to the wall with the screws going through the canvas, rather than through the frame. My husband and I still laugh about that place.
Is that crushed green velvet fabric on the walls!??

No brothels allowed? Bummer.
Over here on Thompson St. we had our yearly co-op meeting last night. Suddenly a 5% raise in monthly maintenance seems like a minor annoyance compared to what's happening on Bedford!
Thank God for home ownership because if I want to vandalize my own stuff, cut my hair on the roof or run a brothel at my house, nobody bothers me about it. Well, not yet anyway.
